Quote from ScootyHow civil of you.
Quote from Alien AnimsPin, you talk like you have been living for 3000 years, I agree with you, even though Im an adolescent.
Quote from PinKids 12 and under shouldnt be swearing for ANY reason. But they seem to repeat after parents, or feel "cool" when they say a bad word. It's very annoying and bad because they will grow up to cuss excessively.
Kids 13 - 17 will most likely cuss, but should keep it to a minimum. Not really because it's bad, but just because they should show respect to the peers they don't know, their teachers, and the adults around them because its just common curtsy. At this age, usually cussing isn't cool, it's just common language among friends and is usually showed with anger.
Adults 18+ are free to swear, as adults, they should already have the respect for others and peers, but as they grow should keep swearing more to their friends. The only reason swearing is an issue is because it's disrespectful, and some people may not like to hear swear words, or may want to keep their children from hearing too much swearing.
Everyone has the right to swear, but they should at least be respectful to the people around them.
Quote from EnvoyIf you say "everyone has the right to swear", you just contradicted your claim that "kids under the age of 12 shouldn't be swearing for any reason". Instead it should be everyone above the age of 12 should have the right to swear. Kids should be allowed to swear, but they should be made aware of the consequences of doing so under certain situations. Allow them to make their own mistakes and then they can learn from it directly. Direct experience is one of the most effective ways to learn, and thus they will come to their own understanding that you can swear here, but you can't swear over there. Teaching them you can't swear no matter what is silly and is bound to fail. Complete restriction only inhibits learning and make kids feel a greater impact of the words when it is used against them. I like Scarecrows explanation, "words have power because people perceive them to have power." Restriction gives swear words power.
From experience I completely restricted myself from swearing in primary school and highschool until around year 10. Turns out that I now have trouble swearing in front of friends which really diminishes the fun and makes it harder to vent. And now whenever I swear in front of others, people are stunned in awe which gets really annoying. It is better to not get into my situation. Swearing is a form of expression and is just as important as other words in language. And like other words, it is simply a matter of using it in the right situation.
Quote from PinI said shouldn't as in by my opinion I don't think they should. But by law they have the right to say what they want. And also I said that you shouldn't curse excessively because some people give it the "power" to offend them. And even though it may not offend you, you should at least give them the respect to not hear what bugs them. You don't have to spend every waking moment with them.
Quote from EnvoyThis is the debate section, saying it is "my opinion" is not a defense. I know it is your opinion, and I disagree with parts of it (your second paragraph about kids under 12).
Considering that all you did was reiterate your previous argument, I find that I should do the same since you probably did not understand what I said. If you read my post you would see that no where did I agree with swearing excessively. I said that kids should be allowed to swear so they will understand when and where to swear/not to swear, learn about respect and not to offend others through their own experience. Please, re-read what I said.
Quote from PinI understood that point, I wasnt pointing out my point again, I was saying that you said I contradicted myself. I was saying that I contradict the law. My thoughts are something that can't be accomplished through law because of fact. My opinion loses to fact. Do you get what i'm saying?
Quote from Arch-AngelTo me, "curse" words are words of emphasis that add feeling and emotion to what it is that you are saying. It can help establish the severity of a situation.
To use the word "fuck" as much as the word "the" would deter the meaning and strength making it utterly useless to say and quite annoying.
The end.
