I just got back from seeing this. It's really good. Normally when movies shove a bunch of references and shit it feels forced and patronizing, but in this I didn't feel that way at all, simply because the entire movie's universe is centered around video games and video game characters mingling together in a power bar at a real-world arcade. In fact, having actual licensed characters simply made the movie more interesting and more relatable. I highly recommend checking this movie out, Disney really does a good job, and it's got a plot that has something for everyone (you can really pick out the gamers in the audience).
I've been looking forward to this movie ever since I first heard about it back in 2009 when it was in development and called Reboot Ralph, and despite after all that time and hype, the movie ended up being better than I had anticipated. I did have a problem with Sarah Silverman when I first heard she was going to be in the movie, because I despise her. When her character first appears I was sucked out of the movie because I couldn't picture anything else other than Sarah Silverman in a recording studio. However, once her character is established and you kind of learn about her and understand her plight, images of Sarah Silverman vanished for me and I was once again drawn back in.
I don't have too many gripes with the movie. I do wish they had entered more than 3 game universes, maybe having a montage where Ralph is trying out being a hero and messing it up, then moving on. It felt a little rushed the way they moved the plot along at first, but I can understand why they didn't focus too much on Ralph trying to be a hero in other games because that's not really where the meat of the movie is. Still, I wish the universe didn't feel so limited.
On a side note, the short before the movie starts was fantastic. Really really well done as well. Disney was able to get the look of their classic animation style down using 3D animation perfectly.

I'm pleasantly surprised at all the positive reception this movie is getting. they could have very easily fucked up such a premise.

meh there was only 32 real video game references
Nov 8, 2012 5:43 PM #781878
lol this list counts over 50. At any rate, why is that meh? Even if it was 32, that's still a large number, and it's a lot better than 0. Almost any other time the company producing the movie wouldn't have bothered with licensing or any of that legal shit and just made up a bunch of fake video games and characters which always feels like a cop out.

Actually. I've lost faith in the Disney/dream works movies. But this one looked really interesting. I saw bowser & Pac-man ghosts in the trailer. Which to me says that whatever video game references there placing into this are good ones. idk if ill see it in theaters until I've gotten more reccomendations on it.

Sonic was in the poster. He was only shown 3 times in the movie. Oh posters, why you give me wrong ideas.

Mario and Luigi were supposed to be in, voiced by the guy who actually does their voices, but the writers couldn't come up with an adequate spot for them that they felt did them justice but also didn't distract from the movie. I think they also said something about licensing being a bitch.

They actually mentioned Mario during the party scene. If you didn't notice.
As for the movie, I have to say I loved it. It was very well done, and enjoyable the entire time. The references had me smiling throughout the movie. And the cartoon at the beginning was phenomenal. Wreck-It Ralph is one of my favorite movies this year.
