Whenever I play an online game, I often tend not to use a headset and immediately mute it because being pointed out for my gender like it matters and having pissy 12-year-old kids getting happy for nothing when I join a party with them knowing I'm a girl is very fucking annoying.

I'd just not use the headset. Not like I use a headset on public chat anyway. Games like CoD are full of fuckwits. You'll probably have a bad time regardless of your gender if you don't mute everyone in the lobby, because there is always bound to be some 11 yo kid raging about some insignificant bullshit. In games like LoL you can't really tell. You should always play LoL with a fixed team anyway, because playing with randoms is near torture most of the time.
