So, you're saying you like RS and AT better than Family Guy? Alright then, but that's how I feel.
Nov 21, 2012 12:31 AM #793187
i don't really think the 3 shows can be compared all that much. they're pretty different in a lot of ways.
Nov 21, 2012 12:39 AM #793192
i'm saying its insulting to the medium to say that adventure time is like cartoon network's family guy

ITT disillusioned teenagers looking at last decades shitty cartoons through rose colored glasses. 90s kids mirite!?!!?
Nov 21, 2012 12:46 AM #793198
Well, it does have things in it that small kids wouldn't usually get, so I'm saying it's mainly for teenagers even though it's not as crude as Family Guy. If you feel so strongly about it then so be it. How is it insulting? And Manny93, yes they're different, I'm not directly comparing a kids show to a show on FOX.
EDIT: I hope this isn't going to become one of those topics where you argue about one thing for like 40 pages.

you seriously don't think the quality of cartoons has decreased since the early 2000s? let alone to not think 90s cartoons were motherfucking loads better than the shit thats been on? or do you even watch cartoons
Nov 21, 2012 2:17 AM #793277
Not really. Shows that have been created recently are also liked by the cartoon watching community. As long as a show has some real work put into the scripting, dialogue and animation/art, then regardless of the times it would still be a good show. Recent shows like Korra, Young Justice, Adventure Time and Regular Show haven't been created in the 90's or 'in the old days' like I said on the first post and they're all still kick ass.

Are you kidding? Cartoons have always been fucking shitty. It depends on what you consider when you say "quality", because they just swapped barely passable writing for better and easier animation post-2005. There are obvious exceptions, I'm just making generalizations for the sake of this thread, which started by doing the same. The only reason we could stand the sub-par animation and generally lackluster plot lines is because we were younger and the times were very different. The only reason we still find the cartoons we enjoyed as kids enjoyable now is because of the fond memories we have distorting our perception of what we're watching.
Every fucking kid I know who's around the same age as me obnoxiously spouts of the same shit you guys are saying, oblivious to the fact that it's entirely subjective how "good" something is. Stating as a matter of fact that cartoon quality has declined displays an appalling lack of perspective. I can almost guarantee if you tried to sit through something you remember as being good, but otherwise don't recall anything about, you'd find it to be boring, uninterested, or just plain shit. That is, unless you happened to pick an exception.
I should also point out that you guys are probably comparing todays worst cartoons to the best cartoons from the 90s or whatever. It's worth noting that there were just as many fucking shitty cartoons back then than there are now, so it's unfair to say that newer cartoons are shitty when you're comparing different classes. I think one of the biggest if not the only reason people our age actually like any cartoons these days is due to nostalgia, and having the cartoon remind them of when they used to like cartoons. This guy does a decent job of explaining this about Adventure Time.

Quote from HewittI bet the 80s kids gripe about how the 90s cartoons are shit just as much as the post-2000 adults think the cartoons now are ruining the spirit of the 90s. It's as Jeff said. We're somehow affected by a Nostalgia Filter that forces us to think about only the good things of back then.
i have never heard anyone make such a claim. i don't think cartoons are becoming bad, i think that phase is passed, which is why we have good shit like adventure time and regular show, rather than.. my gym partners a monkey.. camp lazlo... squirrel boy.. hihi puffy amiyumi.. juniper lee..
thank god chowder came along and changed shit up

Yeah that statement may be true to some people, that they only like things because of nostalgia but this is not the case with me and many others now. I used to watch spongebob when I was a kid and now I still do. But I can distinguish between the good and the horrible parts of it. Like I said in the first post, everything after season 3 was total shit because the original writers and creator left the show. Back when I was a kid I used to love everything about spongebob. Shitty or not. But now I'm starting to see the real side of what was good and bad with it. The humor and the characters are just bad after season 3 because everything is just so miserably written, and the animation is plain lazy. I just tried to watch an episode from season 5 and oh man it was the exact meaning of horrible. After that I watched an episode of spongebob from season 2 and it was genuinely funny, witty, and all that good stuff.
Now again, I was still a kid when I enjoyed spongebob after season 3 but now that I'm older I can see that it sucks and that the original creator's episodes of spongebob back during and before season 3 was epic. Btw, I'm not saying anyone should agree with what I say, if you don't agree that's fine.

no!!1 spongebob was always bad/good!! you only think its bad now cos ur just thinkin about then and not NOW. stop thinkin n just sit there n watch. nostalgia!!!! youre not capable of judging if shows are good or not cos past shows have a lasting effect on u!!
Nov 21, 2012 3:18 AM #793361
No but season 4 was in 2004 when I was still a kid and I used to like it. Now I hate it because everything about the classic spongebob (how the creator wanted it to stay) is completely gone.

I have mixed feelings about Adventure Time. On one hand I love its absurd humor, but the level of absurdity is subjective. I much rather preferred the absolute batshit nonesense that was the episode pilot. I had hoped the series would be like that when the first season came out and for awhile it did.
its good for a pilot, but actual shows need to be more fleshed out, which adventure time does very well

I wouldn't say the ONLY reason. I think it's definitely a large factor, though. I recently went on a kick rewatching a lot of old stuff that I used to think was fucking awesome, but this time around I felt that I only really put up with it because I was convinced it was good due to nostalgia. For instance, Woody Woodpecker, Ren & Stimpy, Aaaah! Real Monsters, Bobby's World, Hey Arnold!, The Wild Thornberrys, Sonic, Mario, and Sonic Underground are all series I loved as a kid and that I watched within the last few months on Netflix, and I only got through maybe 2. The rest just didn't sit right, and I only really kept watching because I kept telling myself they were good and would get better as I watched. It never happened. I watched an episode of Ren & Stimpy with a bunch of my friends in the room and we all got insanely bored because it just wasn't funny. It was just bizarre. I also rewatched the Rugrats movie on netflix recently and I only marginally liked it, compared to when it first came out when my age and maturity level was more in tune with how it was written. You can't tell me you find the potty humor in that show as funny now as you did back then, can you?

Lol I do have to admit, that exact thing happened to me for Courage the Cowardly Dog. I still love Rugrats, Aaaah! Real Monsters, Woody Woodpecker and Hey Arnold! though.
