It doesn't save money. It costs several times more to execute someone than to keep them imprisoned because of the lengthy appeals process. In terms of space, I have to assume the vast majority of criminals would not be eligible for the death penalty so you wouldn't get much benefit. Better to build bigger prisons. Or do something less extreme to reduce the number of prisoners, like decriminalizing drugs or more emphasis on rehabilitation.
