You kinda need to research shield wall. Plus, again, giants can also attack the albows while blocking shots, which speartons cannot do.

That is optional. You can choose not to research Shield Wall

to be fair guys, Speartons are the prefered tankers in the early to mid portion of the game due to faster build time and cheaper than giants. However, if the game drags on, Giants are best choice.

For a fully grown Giant, you need 4 Spearton.

plus albows can move over your speartons relatively easily. True they can move around giants but they risk being hit and with speartons you have to get out of shield wall and go back to it and they move around way to much
