I disagree. It was neat, but there's no way he deserves money for his lack of effort.
You should work on your art skills a little bit (assuming you made the backgrounds and majority of the images in photoshop or GIMP?) and make a continuation of it.
I'd be more than happy to give you some advice or pointers about what you could do to make it even more visually appealing if you do.
