In a category (say, general), some threads in it have five stars beside the name to the right, 5 yellow stars, or a few yellow stars and a few uncolored stars. Using iPad, so can't use screenshot. But my question is, what determines the rating of the thread? Because the yellow star thing is probably rating.

There is a "rate this thread" dropdown button you can click above the first post to the right, and there you can rate the thread.
