I've wanted to discuss this for a long time, so here goes!
I love metroid. Its one of my favorite game series, and one of the few i still avidly play. I fell for it fairly recently when i bought the metroid prime trilogy, and though many hardcore fans prefer the side-scrollers, i love the fps trilogy.
When i play games, the thing i pay attention to most is character and story. The deep lore, backstory, and exstensive history of the planets in the metroid games are my highlights of the games. So when i eventually bought Other M and downloaded the rom for Fusion, naturally my reaction was something like, "dafuh is dis shat?!"
To get to the point, fusion and other m completly redefined samus' character. I mean, the whole point of other m was to delve further into the character. But cruddy dialougue, an awful voice actress, and the fact that she took orders seemed to me completly wrong. Sure, for the sake of the mission, she might have taken directive. But requiring authorization to use suit functions that were always there? I nearly threw up.
My mental picture of what samus is like is as follows: she is strong cold, quiet and calculating. Her tragic past has made her put up a shield to growing close to others. She is extremely intelligent, and prefers to do things her own way. She is NOT the whiney brat she was portrayed as in other m. Despite the mask she puts on, she is actually very thoughtful and caring of her comrades.
Now my vision might have flaws, but it certainly sets a standard that i was hoping would be met with the voice actress. Ins but instead, we got this voice that is completly devoid of tone or emotion. Ill give some slack, maybe the script was poorly written. Whatever the case, ths actress clearly didnt get the character. I feel like samus' hidden vulnerability was too accentuated.
Anyway, my question to you is this: what do you think samus should be in the next game? Do you think nintendo will keep up the trend or try to right the wrong?
