This is one of the most ill-founded boycotts I've ever seen.
Many people are boycotting the Olympics because they are being held in Bejing, and they disagree with the actions of the Chinese government.
The Olympics are about friendship dispite disagreements. It's supposed to be when even the most hostile countries lay down their arms for the sake of international cooperation and peace, even if only for a little while.
DO you think the boycotter's cause is just or unjust and why?

Boycotting the Olympics is a joke. When you boycott something, that mean you refuse to use the service in an attempt to cause financial issues and ultimately shutting down the service.
Boycotting the Olympics carries the same weight as boycotting grass.

What they are boycotting is merchandise and products that sponsor the olympics, such as Coke products and tshirt companies.

I think the idea of the boycott is to use the Olympics, which of course is an event that will receive widespread national media attention, to draw attention to their cause. The protests and boycotts aren't directly related to the Olympics themselves.
I think it's a perfectly valid way of making an important cause known.

But wouldn't it make more sense to boycott chinese goods, like toys and electronics? Well, it wouldn't get the attention, but it would be more direct and actually effect the Chinese economy if it became widespread.

You answered your own question.
It's not about directly impacting the Chinese government or economy, and I sincerely doubt a boycott would become widespread enough to cause such an impact, or at least one of any significant concern.
The best they can do right now is draw attention to a corrupt government that has done everything possible to hide their evils. And what better way to do that than through an event with worldwide exposure. The amount of attention they get is the most important thing right now.

I feel compelled to ask: why do they HAVE to host it in Beijing if this country is causing so many problems with people rebelling and shit?
Jun 6, 2008 12:05 AM #149544
They don't have to, they WANT to.
They are ignoring the governement's wrongs, just as they should. Deciding not to host it there would be contradictive to the purpose of the Olympics.
Now, about why they are doing it in Beijing rather than another country, it's because of some system already in place for deciding the country.
@The Pirate: Ah, I see. So, it makes sense for them do boycott, but some have gone as far as to try to extinguish the Olympic Torch. Surely that is going to far.

Why?
Just because it is an old tradition it's a sacred line that should never be crossed?

No, because they end up hurting people in the process. They've tried to hurt the carriers to stop them.

I think its perfectly justified.

Only a few of them have done that.
The Olympics usually have some kind of protests going on around it. Protesting the Olympics is a great way to being attention to an issue. I can't think of a better way for the world to pressure the Chinese Government into change than by protesting during the 2008 Olympics.

Oh, okay, I understand. And people say these debates don't change anyone's oppinions.
