Well, on the one side: Yes it is purly cosmetic. But on the other side: When you got an army with your dream armory, and you think it looks badass, then it will make YOU fell better. Result: Better feeling - better battle.

it can generate fear on the other guy making him think you won a lot of battles to get that gear
