Newgrounds is a reliable source when it comes to downloading songs. Not only is the site royalty-free (the right to use copyrighted material without the need to pay), but the tracks from other users are actually pretty good depending on the skill of the user. Just keep in mind that if you don't see a download button while at an audio page, it's because you need a Newgrounds account to download their track.
Usually I download copyright material by copy-pasting the url of a song on Youtube I like to a Youtube to MP3 converter, and then take the downloaded song into Audacity and modify it to fit my animations. Since my animations are non-commercial (so far, at least), it's actually fine to do this.

Newgrounds, Youtube, SoundCloud, and etc. But the music that Hyun got for his LoL Spotlights were made by a friend of his by over-tracking the finished product WITHOUT the SFX and music. So really, you have many sources. But, I'd recommend either Newgrounds or SoundCloud for that they vary in a lot of things and it's easier to search for.

I think it just takes experience to know some instrumental music bands. Each time you hear a song from an animation and you get the feeling of "HOYLY CRAP THIS IS EPIC", wait till the end of the animation and see the credits to see the music name.
Once you find it, here comes the fun part. Look for that song in youtube, and try to get it via download link or something, then keep looking in the related videos for more music from the same artist, you might get impressed on the huge quantity of amazing music you can find.
After you get bored of looking from the same artist. Try to click the related videos that are not from the same artist, those videos will mostly be of the same kind of music that you were hearing. The first times is hard to find some music, but once you found your favorite music style, find some really epic music will be quite easy.
To get started let me recommend you some instrumental music groups/artists that you might like:
- Waterflame (it has fight music, nice techno/dupstep like instrumental songs, and some relaxing music too)
- E.S Posthumus (purely orchestral music, mostly ised in trailer and in epic fights)
More groups like the band above: X-Ray dog, Two steps from hell, Audiomachine, Sencit Music, Epic Score)
- "LoL dominion theme", this is the one that Hyun used for his spotlight, is from a game, and it has a lot of music like this one
-Assasin's creed music/God of War music, you will get impressed with the wonrderful music from these games.
Now for some authors.... my favorite ones are:
- Hanz Zimmer: Creator of the music from the pirates of the caribean, Sherlock Holmes, Inception, How to train your dragon, and a crap top more of movies)
- John Powell: Creator of How to train your dragon music, and Kung fu panda (he worked along with hanz for this one), he has more movies' OST but I can't remember now
Well that's it for now, I hope it helped :3.
