If you are reading this it means you are a fan of the horror genre!

"horror genre", it captures a lot of people who seek thrill when gaming. Whether it is a horror-survival game or an horror-shooter, they all give thrill.
Some of my favourite horror-survival games would be:

- Amnesia "the dark descent"
- Silent Hill Homecoming

Some of my favourite horror-shooter games would be:

- Dead Space 2
- Counter Strike (zombie mod)
- Fallout (all series)
- Bioshock (1 and 2)
- Left 4 dead (1 and 2)

I'm pretty sure I've played more, but these are the ones that pop in my head after 5 minutes of thinking.

Now tell me, what are your favourite horror games?
Is there a game you would highly recommend to be played?
A game which absolutely gives you that satisfying chicken skin?
Maybe there are some awesome horror games to be released? (For example: Amnesia "the pig machine")

As a huge fan of the horror game genre I'd be happy to hear your story of the most thrilling game moment. (of course tell me which game!)

I would be hesitant to call Fallout a horror-themed series. It seems like it's just a regular survival type game to me. What makes something part of the horror genre, in your opinion?

The vaults and some warehouses filled with Feral's are pretty scary to me. And I freaked out when I encountered my first Deadclaw and Behemoth.

Seriously I grabbed a Teddy bear from a shopping cart, heard giant footsteps coming towards me and then saw this huge behemoth charging at me. I was only level 9 so I got killed in one hit. -_- it was awesome and definitely gave me a thrill.

But yeah I suppose you could say it's pretty "Horrific", I mean the way you can kill everything and chop them into pieces. Although Fallout is designed to be a RPG/survival game, I think you're right, "horror" wouldn't really fit.

It is an RPG, but certainly has some disturbing elements in it!

My brother played Doom 3 once and he thought it was really scary. The first time I played it, I thought it was really scary too. But the game is really hard too.

Doom, I think I played the first game of that one. Is it comparable to Dead Space ? I mean the story line.

Also what do you guys think of F.E.A.R. is it worth playing?

FEAR 1 is good, FEAR 2 is good too I guess, and FEAR 3 is Call of Duty with ghosts. The first two are worth playing, but the third isn't.

Not really...I was reading this out of curiousity...

Also...So far my only favorite horror game is Doom 3 and L4D (If you count that as a horror :P)

I even have the expansion pack of Doom 3...but I never get to the end since I always get bored...

I recommend you to play:

The Crooked Man: This horror game is free and it's only 100mb. But once you play it, you'll get addicted on it. Check the website for some screenshots.

Paranoiac: The guys who made The Crooked Man. Has same graphics with The Crooked Man but different story line. Check the website for some screenshots.

Imscared: Really small game but it's totally worth playing. An indie first person Minecraft graphics-like horror game where you should avoid Imscared (the ghost right? lol). Check the website for some screenshots. You will really like this one!

You see people LP horror games all the time these days both past and present, but really aside from the greats, there's only been 2 games that have scared the shit out of me for being downright unsettling. The Chzo Mythos and this:

Nobody knows about Downfall, a very good psychological horror adventure. It is rare to find something that doesn't rely on cheap tricks and jump scares to work, and truly gets into your skin via the story and ambiance. It's the closest thing to Silent Hill that's well, not Silent Hill.

It looks interesting, to bad it's some sort of flash game though, but hey, the good horror-games are mostly like this. Can I download this somewhere? (I tried google but it only gives me "Devil may cry" for some reason unknown....)

I've heard of The Crooked Man, it had my curiosity but now it has my attention. (cheap quote from Jango)
Not so sure about Imscared though, it seems like the "Slender" game to me. If you guys haven't played Slender you should, it's nerve wrecking and scary.

I don't know about the third, but a combination of CoD and FEAR seems like a fun game to me. horror-shooters are also on my favourite lists so... I might download it later.

Flash? Wtf are you talking about. Your google fu sucks because I found it in a heartbeat.

http://www.wadjeteyegames.com/downfall.html

It's a commercial game. Created with Adventure Game Studio (thats the tool, not the Developer which is Wadjet Eye Games, known for making the Blackwell series).

Thanks. And yeah I suppose my google "fu?" sucks.
With Flash I mean the "crappy" design of the game, it's not 3D or anything. But as I said, most good horror games are with bad design. (compared to Dead space you know what I mean)

EDIT: I'm downloading the game right now, it seems very interesting.
I see people are talking about "The Cat Lady", is it related to this game, should I play that one first?

EDIT2: I played the game for like 1 hour, it was very interesting. But once I read "piece of diary" I couldn't go back to the game, so I had to close it and now I have to start all over again... but hey, thanks for the cool game anyway!

No. I really don't know what you mean. Dead Space's game design was lackluster. Yes, the premise was scary. Yes, the monsters were good. But the bare bones of it was so predictable and felt more like an action shooter than a horror game. How many times have you experienced expecting an ambush after acquiring a key item in that game? How bout, every damn time. Not to mention, the game is chock full of Jump Scares which isn't what horror games are all about! Granted, the whole epitaph thing was creepy but it was more of a easter egg if anything.

Note that I'm not saying Jump Scares make a game crappy. If the game has only a few of them, then it's reportedly effective. But jam them in every 20 minutes and it feels like overusing a cliche. And that includes every Slender clone in one way or another that uses the Scare Chord to make you jump silly.

I hope you're not insinuating that bad graphics or games made with simpler engines make for badly designed games. Lone Survivor was scary. The Chzo Mythos was scary. HOME was scary. There's Ib, Nanashi No Game, Sanitarium, Gabriel Knight, White Chamber, Deep Sleep and Don't Escape (incidentally the only Flash games in my example), and Nothing Else which was made by the guy that made Imscared.exe

btw The Cat Lady is just a game made after Downfall. Whereas Downfall was their first experimental foray into that genre, The Cat Lady went full on with the insanity aspect of it. The creator/author of the game (I just found out wasn't Wadjet Eye, they just host the game in their site) worked as an actual nurse and all information from both games was majorly derived from real life ramblings of the insane/depressed patients they had to work with.

I want to thank you for the game you told me to check out. I just finished Downfall and I have to say it was a very good game. The storyline was impressive but still not entirely clear to me. For example (spoiler, do not read if you haven't played Downfall and you are planning to play it), did Joe and Agnes really meet? If it was all a creation of Joe's mind, then why did they have this adventure together? I'm assuming you also played the game.

As I'm typing this I'm downloading "The Cat Lady", I heard rumors about Joe also appearing in this game, I'm anxious to play it. Thanks again :)

Ao Oni is pretty creepy. You should try it, if you want to play it.
