Halo is not a classic. Perhaps the first one can be called one, but not Halo 2 or 3.
Gears will surely be considered a classic in years to come.
However, I will only call games like Half-Life 2, Portal, Oblivion, and GTAIV classics. These are games that did things either better than any other game in it's genre had before or did something completely new. Those are games that I will remember quite fondly 30 years from now.

Don't start with the realism claims, people always fail at showing that the realism goes beyond the requirements for gameplay.
And yes, I enjoy the Halo series. They are very solid shooters, and the only ones I've played that make heavy use of grenades, melee, and jumping.

im not going to deny that its a good game, hell i'll probably get the 3rd game cause i've playd the first two and online looks like grand fun, but i just hate the 10 year olds that play it
