UPDATE: It's been confirmed with authorities that the teenager is still being held. And that he's bail is $500,000!!!!

I am deeply disappointed with planet Earth right now.
I think it's odd that anything a teenager says on an online video-game where everything is supposed to defy the laws of the modern world can be taken seriously and cause a 8 year sentence. Kids say stupid shit all of the time, they don't know they're having any effect on anyone else, especially in the middle of something like League Of Legends. Sometimes they don't know if they're saying anything to begin with. I kind of feel sorry for the one kid who did the one thing many many children do every single day all the time and only he was sent to prison for it.
Isn't there a difference between verbal and physical actions?

To be honest, I'm not surprised about this case. Joke or not, the mention of commiting such a gruesome and serious act could be taken as a threatening attack to some people, especially the ones who are worried about the same event happening again.

But I guess that's 'Merica for you, lol.

I'm a bit curious how a grown female stumbled upon a teenager's post on an online battle arena video game though.

EDIT: Y'know, I take that back. I'm actually a bit surprised about the fact that a kid would get arrested and sent to prison for 8 years just for some stupid stuff he said online that wasn't really thought about when said. I don't know why this is thought to be a really serious offense compared to homicides and other acts that happen here on a regular basis.

That's what I was thinking.
If I said something like "do that again and I'll kill you!", most people would just think I'm angry or upset over it, but if I actually killed a person for doing something I don't like, then it's a crime.
And you'd find sentences like what I just said all over the media, and you'd also hear something more along the lines of what the teenage boy said in the media, although not as common; a lot more people say these sorts of things than most people would think.

This is just horrible. It isn't like the kid meant anything by it, i mean he said lol and jk after it. How are you gonna charge a young man with eight fucking years for a comment. I swear America is really starting to fall apart. It just sucks that a few school shootings destroys a kids freedom to talk, not knowing what he's even saying. But you know what they say, one bad apple spoils the bunch i suppose. I just wish rapists and murderers could have as bad as charges as this.

This is the outcome after a couple of school shootings in a short period of time. People take these things way too seriously. Sure, it's a threat. But, how much of a threat when it was more of a sarcastic comment/post through a game?
