madhatter, you should go the way that i went and just buy a starter pack. the best are either from epiphone, or ibanez. laguina could work too, because they have line six spider amps with them.

I don't really have any name brand stuff, my guitars and amp I sort of inherited when my relatives have cleaned out their houses. I have some shitty acoustic guitar made by a Japanese company named Orpheus, and then I have this Polaris electric guitar and a Ross amp. They aren't great, but if I ever really invest some time into learning how to play guitar, I figure I'd buy a more expensive one. For now they work fine though.

Oh, and of course my guitar hero controller.
