Why not have our characters charged with some mission to guard the Protagonists life and get him to a particular location to stop the world from falling apart?

Why do we need a protagonist?
The way I see it, it could be a creation story without a protagonist, i.e.
Well, there goes a simple Beginning of the World story, and there is no protagonist.
As for the End of the World, this will be fun.
Simply put, not every creation story has to have a protagonist. We can always put it down to some Taoist philosophies.
That was a rough draft I came up with on the spot, so please excuse the poor writing.
