Recently I was playing a person in a ranked match. After about five minutes, i was creamed- he had two merics, a few speartons, and TWO FULL SIZED GIANTS. I realized after watching the replay that I didn't have nearly enough miners. So, my question is, what is the best possible number of miners. (I assume it varies with the map, so just say if you mean long, medium or short.
Here's the match

Here is our rematch, in which I followed his lead and got far more miners (I won this match)

Like you said,it Varies on the map. But for order you need about 10-12 on gold and 3-5 on mana, for chaos you need about 12-14 on gold and 4-5 on mana. ALWAYS GET MINER HUSTLE!!! It is worth it,TRUST ME.

Generally, you want to stop pumping out miners when you realise you have the obvious economical lead on the enemy. After that you want to focus primarily on your army, first focus on weakening their economy (hit and run his miners). Then get ghost to keep your pressure, just make sure the enemy doesn't have time to build their army
However, if this isn't the case and your enemy is dominating you in economy, then I suggest pumping out more than usual (12 mining- 4 praying). If your opponent is keeping his pressure on your miners, get 2 castle archers/wall. You want to make sure that you're having a faster flow of gold and mana, so by midgame, it will be roughly in your favour. Midgame, you want to get higher tier units which your opponent won't be able to afford (Magekill, Albowtross, Giants)
Note: In small maps like Castle or Halloween, it's almost impossible to recover from a bad start. So at the very beginning, focus more on your army.
Edit: Oh and never forget Miner Hustle

well i usually start growing my army once i have 8 miners mining and at least two praying
after a while i get miner hustle
for long maps you can by away with 16 mining and 6 praying
miner hustle
all three passive incomes
and if you also have the tower the game is yours
after a while i get miner hustle

Dont listen to him. Build army and eco, dont just spam miners.
Also passive income should ONLY be used in an extremly long game or a full on turtle.

Okay, thanks. That really answers my question- I used to only get 8 miners :P, and 3 for mana.
But I always get miner hustle.
Anyway, I have a new question- where do you recommend putting the miners- mana or gold- to get the most gold possible (obviously getting the miner hustle earlier will give me more gold, to a point)
And don't worry about short maps, I'm good at taking the half-point in the beginning. However, I would like to know if there is a limit to how much gold one should spend on their army in the begging. (I could solve this on my own if I knew how often the half-point gives 20 gold)

At the very beginning, get 1 miner at the very least. After that just make sure your economy is better than theirs, whether that means killing their miners or making more yourself.

I usually start with 2 crawlers and get 2 miners. I get miner hustle also. I get 8 on gold and 4 on mana, start working on a good army, get 4 more on gold. I get my army 2 80 pop. I get passive money. I sacrifice some until I have 6 miners. Get a better army.

Thanks. Keep giving any suggestions, but keep in mind that A: I don't have chaos (although I did once try it on a friend's account) and B: I almost always win on short maps.

Scout and always have more miners than your opponent. Get Passive income if you are on the defensive since it will counteract the economic advantage from the tower. Also get it too if you are on the offensive since gold runs out eventually.

It's better to have more than your average 12 miners. It has to be at least more than 12. Then check your enemy. Harass if possible. Take a look at your enemy. If he has more miners than you, keep on buying miners. If not, stop. Focus on your army.

For me, on medium: 9 gold 4mana, on large: 9-12 gold 4-6 mana....but note: I am just 1700 and I will take a little break...

Make as many as you need, Its all situational. It also varies depending on your build.
