How can I tween a symbol so it fades out in Flash 8?

For example, lets say I draw a mini explosion, and want the smoke to fade out. I try to use shape/motion tween to fade it out, but I realize that tweens don't work with symbols, so I'm not sure what to do. Any help? If there is a tutorial in the Flash section that I missed, I'd be grateful to be redirected.

tweens do work for symbols just click on color on the bottom and alpha
