[spoiler=Part 4: Unknown Choices] “There’s too many! We have to find a way around them to get-” Before she could finish, the monstrous Dragon swooped in from behind a wall of smoke and grabbed her. “AAAAAAH!”
“ELECTRA NO!” He looked around, and had to make a quick decision. “Haley run, quick! Get out of here!”
“What?! No, I won’t leave you two.”
“Just go! I’ll get Electra and be right behind you.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, how will you get her from-”
“Damn it Haley! Don’t argue with me, just go!” He said as he made his way after the Dragon.
“Kane, don’t tell me to go. I can’t just leave, so don’t ask me to! I WON’T!” She followed him.
He turned and grabbed her shoulders. “Listen! Lecty wouldn’t want both of us to get hurt because of her. One of us needs to get away alive, and it has to be you-”
“LOOK OUT!”
A horned creature hurled a ball of violet flames at Kane from a distance, missing him by inches after Haley tackled him to the ground. The roaring Black Dragon held my body in his right talons as it flew toward the top of the small mountain. The late evening sky was shielded behind pillows of dark smoke, being fed by the scattered fires amongst the once prosperous forest. The dieing woods was filled with at least another dozen of the monstrosities, closing in on the two remaining friends. It seemed as though the assassins, whoever these vile beings were, would stop at nothing to finish their targets.
“You need me. And I will not let them have Lecty without doing all that I can to save her. I’m NOT going!” She said, quickly moving off of him and putting up small walls of ice for cover as she made her way toward the mountain.
“They’re everywhere! Hurry, we need to get to higher ground!” He replied without argument as he followed closely behind. After minutes that felt like hours of dodging hurled fireballs, they reached the base of the cliff. “You go first! Climb!”
Getting to the first ledge she turned around, attempting to help him up, and witnessed his back get impaled by a fiery axe. “KANE!” She grabbed his quickly limping hand and pulled him up. She held him close and, unknowing what to do about the weapon lodged in her friend, decidedly left the blade where it was. “Oh gods, Kane, no.”
He clutched at her arms with all the strength he had left, the pain rendering him unmoving and stiff. “Ugh… -COUGH-… shit.” Agony reflected on his face, nearly tangible, and he began to do what she had never seen him do before. He cried.
“AAAAAAH!” A scream came from above. Looking up, she watched as, in seemingly slow motion, my body fell toward the burning forest.
“ELECTRA!” Hot tears flowed down her cheeks. Tears of anger, pain, and fright, but mostly guilt. She wasn’t strong enough. A hand weakly grabbed hers, and she looked down into his wide eyes.
“I’m sor-COUGH- sorry… I wasn’t stong…” He tried to speak through his own blood as it slowly suffocated him. “… sorry I couldn’t… -COUGH- protect… you. Both of you.” Blood and tears rand down the sides of his face.
“No…” She croaked through her lump filled throat. “No, no… not like this…” A shadow suddenly covered the top of his body and she looked up. A creature with horns, wings, claws and fangs loomed over them, wielding a long blade. One quick lunge and the sword pierced his neck, killing him while still in her arms. The sword was drawn back, and before it was shoved through her heart, she looked at the Demon with all of the hate, anger and defiance that she felt burning behind her eyes. “… No.” It sneered back, enjoying her answer, before taking her life.

“No!” I yelled weakly, trying to catch my breath as I coughed though my own spittle. I was freezing, shaking in a cold sweat as I slowly regained my bearings. Through heavy eyelids, I looked around the monotonous room I inhabited. Three cement walls surrounded me, enclosed by a glass wall of equal length with a sliding glass door, from floor to roof, as the only entrance… or exit. It looked like it lead into a hallway that went left and right. I was half lying against the wall opposite of the door, and half lying on the cold cement ground. Reaching for my itchy eyes, I came upon what kept me in my uncomfortable position. I was chained to two wall cuffs, each entrapping one of my wrists, placed at about three feet up from the floor. I turned my head and wiped my eyes on the sleeve of my jacket.
I was still wearing the same clothes from the day of the bank robbery. Another quick scan of the room, and I noticed that I was the only inhabitant. No cot, no toilet, no window. One corner of the room had a camera set to view the entire space. I don’t know how long it’s been since the robbery, I don’t remember much afterwards. I was so exhausted, I wouldn‘t be shocked if I just crashed as soon as we got home. Then how the hell did I get here? The last thing I remember was barely walking out of the bank with Haley, other then the sight of her dieing right before my eyes.
It was just a dream, I thought to myself as convincingly as I could. I’ve had dreams before that seemed lifelike, almost indistinguishable from reality. Witnessing such horrid events from outside my own body doesn’t help assure me that the goings-on aren’t truth. Gods… damn nightmare!
And where the hell am I? My strength and energy was coming back. I pushed on the boundaries of my memory, trying to remember more before I wound up chained in some prison. I had just recalled Haley and I stopping somewhere after escaping when suddenly a loud high pitch thud, immediately followed by the creaking sounds of metal on metal, came from somewhere on the other side of the glass wall. Footsteps began getting louder and louder.
“She’s just woken up, sir.” I heard faintly through the air holes in the door. A male’s voice, mature and low, full of respect and a hint of intimidation. There was no reply, just the continuation of footsteps.
From the left side of the hall, a tall man made his way to the front of the door. As he got closer, he slowed his stride, examining me through the glass as if I was on exhibit. He had snow white hair, parted on the side and combed to perfection. If he were smiling he could have possibly looked younger than the mid fifties that I judged him to be, but the hard, permanent frown lines etched in his face made him look older if anything.
The man just glared at me for a few moments. I stared back at him, trying to reveal nothing on my face as I memorized his look, while trying to remember why Haley and I stopped on the way home.
There was a loud buzzing sound, and suddenly the glass door slid open and the man strolled the few steps into my cell. Loud buzzing again, and the glass door shut behind him.
He wore a dark pinstripe suit with matching slacks. He forwent a tie and kept his jacket unbuttoned, casually revealing his gun holster and piece to me as he turned and slowly walked a perimeter around me. The shine of his black loafers matched the shine in his cold green eyes. Still, I concentrated on revealing nothing.
After a short bout of staring at each other, the man reached into his right pocket and pulled out small black rectangular object. Pointing his hand toward the glass wall, he pressed a button on the item in his hand and two 16” screens opened up on the glass surface. I kept my gaze on his while noticing through my peripheral that each screen looked to be snapshots of myself and Haley from different angles. He pressed another button and the screens, now matched with audio, began to play video images of the two of us in the bank just before, and as, Haley and I stopped the trio of burglars. How?
The video stopped after about thirty seconds, and then began again from the start. Two more times he let it play before lifting his hand and pressing another button, muting the sound but leaving the videos playing. All the while our staring contest was going strong.
“I know what you are.” He finally said. A deep tenor, raspy and slightly nasally, voice was stored to memory.
When I didn’t reply he turned and followed his earlier path, circling me at a constant distance. He pointed and pressed his remote again, and two pictures popped up on the glass next to the videos. Steeling myself in preparation, I turned toward the monitor. Each picture was a snapshot, one of Kane, and the other Kelly. “I know what they are, too.” he continued.
With only my eyes, I looked back in his direction. “Your little friend has refused to talk, even after every chance that we’ve given her.” Lifting one eyebrow in amusement, he turned and circled once again. “Even after we promised that you’d be killed if she didn‘t answer our questions, she kept her mouth shut…” he stopped and gave me a particularly heavy glower “much like you’re doing now.”
Finally taking his eyes off me, he turned to the videos. “I’m sure if she could she’d do her little magic and freeze herself out of this facility. As I’m sure you’re trying to do now. But that won’t work.” Another press of his buttons, and each screen blinked away. No image of Haley being held captive or tortured? I thought. They don’t have her. She’s too strong to be caught. They must have gotten me when I was unconscious with no one around. Maybe that’s what he wants me to tell them; where the others are.
At that moment, I recalled why Haley and I stopped. She wanted me to take a tablet to restore my energy. With that knowledge added to the unknown amount of time that’s passed, I’m sure I had enough energy to get out of here. So think again, Happy.
He turned his head to face me. “This building is filled with hundreds of guards, each armed and ordered to take out any unauthorized person’s on the grounds. Any wireless capabilities are locked to this organization only, and our firewalls are constantly being monitored, so there’s no way for you to communicate with any outside source. And even if you did somehow make it past our cameras and personnel, you’re one hundred miles away from the nearest civilization.” He turned his body and walked towards me. Shortening the gap between us, he stood by me and grabbed hold of my wrists. With a quick shake, he said “And besides, we’ve studied you enough to know that without the use of your arms you can‘t tap into your abilities. You’re stay here is permanent, and will be much easier if you cooperate.”
What could they have possibly used to study us? Those videos in the bank had to be it. You haven’t done all of your homework, pal. Mask of impassive awareness still kept in place.
He squatted down to the balls of his feet and glared at me. “Where are you from?” No answer. He not so subtly moved his jacket, revealing the easily available weapon to intimidate me. “I’ll ask again, but I’ll be more specific this time. How long have you been on Earth?” What? My eyebrow twitched slightly, and a small, almost infinitesimal, grin formed on his mouth. So much for my mask.
“I told you, I know what you are. And I won’t allow you, or your kind, to come to our planet. We’ve stopped tyrants like you from invading and I assure you, we’ll do it again.” Does he think I’m a damn alien?! Gods, he can’t be serious.
He stared at me again for a few endless moments. Finally he stood, and moved toward the door. “I’ll give you fifteen minutes to convince yourself to give us the information we require. Be warned, however, that negligence will lead to not only harm to yourself, but to your friends as well.” He looked back at me once he reached the door. “Unless you’ve decided you have something to say now.”
Whoever supplies your intelligence is seriously lacking. I know you don‘t have Haley, and don‘t know where my friends are. And Kelly is just a normal Human, and if you touch her you’ll have to answer to Kane, who will not go easy on you. I wanted to say that, just to rub his nose in it.
Getting no reply he turned to the door. “Fifteen minutes, Ms. Bennett.” Well, at least he knows my name. A few seconds went by with him just standing there facing the glass wall. A few more seconds passed. After about thirty seconds he yelled, “Open the door!” I heard a slight yelp before the buzzing sound of the glass door opening shout out. The man walked out, waited for the door to slide shut, and walked down the hall in the opposite direction he came. The last thing I saw of him was the shimmer of light off his slick hair. A much quieter door was opened and shut, and then there was silence.

The fog of my memory was slowly receding, and ten minutes after the man left I’d remembered up until the point of meeting and identifying that the Goddess in my mind was my grandmother. Slowly but surely, our conversation was leaking back through. She’s sent me on some sort of quest… one I’d start alone. Maybe this is the quest. I couldn’t be one hundred percent sure, as my memory was still coming in slow tides.
My arms were getting tired from their hanging position. Enough time had passed, I’d recalled enough to make heads or tails of this situation, and I had less then five minutes to make a decision. Whether this is the quest or not, I think I’d fair better outside of the cell. Closing my eyes, I began to conjure the illusion in my mind. I didn’t know how far away the door keeper was, but I decided it would be much quicker if I went with a simple sight and hearing mirage, and save me my much needed mana.
Forming the image of the man in my cell earlier, I began to chant my escape. “Xe’phora Ta’alu Yiz Kora'li…” continuing, I swiftly cloaked myself as the man. Conjuring his voice, the illusion yelled. “Goddammit will you move off your ass and get me out of this cell, NOW!”
There was a startled whimper before the sentence was finished, followed by fast paced footsteps down the hall. When the guard appeared, I continued the tirade. “Now, private, NOW. Unlock these cuffs!" I was banking on this guard’s obvious fear of the man to cover any noticeable uncharacteristic actions or words I made up.
It seemed to work. “W-w-wait here. The girl’s escaped, I,I, I’ll go- I’ll hit the alarm.” He said, and turned down back to where he came.
Before he stepped I continued. “I’LL handle that! She’s my responsibility, and I’ll not have her make a fool of me. Get me out first, understand!” Receiving a strange, still panicked look, the guard moved a few paces out of site and the buzzing of the door soun
