I'm fairly sure early game surviving is more important than a large army. Get some units to properly defend yourself while working on economy. Perhaps even try taking the tower, but if you know you're going to lose, retreat. If you get the tower, scout out your opponent and prevent him in every way from utilizing his full gold potential. This prevents him from getting as much gold, which means not as much army.
Since you seem new, here's some harassment tips:
Archidons or albowtrosses just outside Castle Archer range are a simple, "set it and forget it" way to prevent usage of the second row of gold. If they go to attack either, you can kite. Albowtrosses will probably not be the best option since they are slower and have a slightly shorter range, allowing a few well used archidons to own them. But if they have a miner wall with speartons, archidons aren't going to do anything, especially if they have merics. In this case albowtrosses with their blazing bolts are necessary.
The tower spawn can make a great "free" tank for you. Let it run in and your archers will follow in after it takes an arrow or two (to make sure the castle archer is locked-on to the spearton) and then your archers can dish out some damage.
If you have a spearton with the shield wall upgrade, put it in the top corner where the castle archer is and put it in shield wall mode. It will absorb all castle archer arrows regardless so your raged swords and archidons (and every one of your low-health units) can run in and do damage.
Those are probably the most effective ones I've used and seen used, so yea, go ahead and use them to win. And if you wanna play me to test your skills (although I am not even "pro" according to some, fluctuating between 1700s and 1800s) add me.
