Tale of Twelve Kids:
Gary Campbell was born into a family of twelve kids. He was the 9th. His parents often had work and so they hired maids to care for the children. Since Gary often felt neglected, he started learning to play the guitar for comfort. When he was 17, Gary finally thought he was sick of being unnoticed; even by the maids or by his own brothers and sisters! He ran away from home and went to live in the city, wanting to finally be noticed. After a few weeks, there weren't even any posters or news about a missing person. With no one to love him, Gary stayed in an alley where no one could find him in the dark. Suddenly, a purple blob of something started glowing. Gary was hungry; and with nothing to eat, he slowly walked over to it. Gary bent down and grabbed it, and the sludge started reacting. It started to morph into Gary's body! He fainted in fear. When he woke up, the sludge has covered his whole body. Gary panicked and started crying. He punched the ground and walls in anger. To his surprise, his punched made dents and cracks and covered the ground and walls with a black substance. On a flyer he was stepping on, Gary noticed it was for a fighting tournament called RHG. Realizing he could finally become noticed if he entered this tourney, Gary trained for months and months, honing his control of the darkness.
Tl;Dr
He was a neglected child and ran away from home to start anew and accidentally grabbed some dark sludge that gave him his powers. He found RHG and wanted to be noticed, so he trained his skills.
