Well, umm, this is really, really dark, so just please don't judge me as being this kind of person just because of how dark my mind seems to be about this topic.
Over the past few months I have watched Kai’s mind slowly unfold. At first, right after the siege of Showla Fortress, it wasn’t too bad. He was able to function just like the rest of us…I thought he’d be able to control it, being a harbinger of chaos and destruction. I didn’t think that the small taint in his aura would become problematic. How wrong I was.
Just last week he began to act differently. He used to be so energetic, to the point where it was usually annoying, but a week ago, he got really quiet, he rarely left his quarters, never said a word to any of us, not even to me and the other people he knew he could trust. Well, until last night. He finally exercised the ability to trust me to keep whatever he needed to talk about a confidential matter, just not in the way we expected him too.
We were all blind to what was going on. We all thought that his sudden turn for the worse was just temporary, and when I entered his room last night, I expected to see him dressed in his robes. I expected him to yell ‘Sneak Attack!’ as he lunged at me with his dagger, his face bearing his trademark stupid grin. I expected him to apologize for being such a bum the past few days and slacking off so much. I did not however, expect what I actually got when I entered the room as he asked me to.
As I pushed the door to the side, I was hit with the strong scent of blood, which was something I was all too familiar with. I cringed as I pushed through the odor, shutting the door behind me. “K-kai, what is going on?” I ask, opening my eyes to see Kai standing in the center of the room, which was lit by several chaos flame lanterns, which burned extremely dim and in an eerie red light. I could barely make out the circle of blood on the floor. Kai’s arm was dripping with something, most likely blood, but it was hard to tell with everything being covered in red light.
“I-I can’t take it any more Rexylt,” He groaned, seeming like he could barely speak.
“What do you mean Kai?” I responded, clueless to what was wrong, I knew that his mind had fallen victim to both corruption and depression, but this was Kai! He’s fought off worse things in the past, I simply couldn’t, and I still can’t understand why he wouldn’t be able to fight this off.
“I-I…can’t…live…I don’t…want to…live…anymore,” he practically had to gasp for each word, he was having trouble breathing.
I stepped forward, placing my hand on his shoulder, sending a pulse of aura through his body, trying to find the problem. I couldn’t detect any serious injuries. “Kai? What are you saying?” I asked. I had no idea what to do, then again, who would know what to do when they walk in on their best friend standing in the center of a demonic ritual circle drawn in their own blood?
“I…I’m too weak Rexy,” he smiled, which just added to the confusion. “I’ve gotten started, but I can’t finish the job.” He reached out and grabbed my hand in his. His skin felt so cold, his grip so weak. He pulled his hand away, leaving his Ceremonial Dagger of Chaos in my hand. “Please, finish me off Rex. You can tell the others that when you came to visit me today, I had gone crazy and attacked you, and you had to kill me in self defense. Just…kill me…please Rexy. You’ll do it, won’t you?”
Kai had never believed in suicide, that’s why he wanted me to do it for him. I got caught up in the look in his eyes, that loving gaze he had given me so many times before, but he looked so weak and you could see the suffering in his pupils, hiding behind the faint, but fake smile on his face.
I could tell that denying his request would just delay the inevitable. It would prolong his obvious suffering. Many of the others here would be happy to kill him, but he wanted someone he could trust to do it. I held the dagger up, just inches from his chin, my hand shaking violently. I couldn’t do it, not with the regret in my heart. Kai had always found it easier to fall in love with a man than a woman, and about six months ago, I had become his new love interest. I just…wasn’t attracted to my own gender, though I respected Kai’s preference, and always made sure to treat him well, but I just couldn’t return the feelings he had for me, and now his narrow-eyes, loving gaze made every memory of Kai’s failed flirting attempts with me and every gesture he made towards me came flooding into my mind.
“Kai…” I sigh. I know I have to do this, for his sake. I step forward, clamping my arms around his shoulders like a vice, trying to return some of the affection he had given me. “I love you Kai,” I cried, unable to help but cry into his shoulder.
“Thank you Rexy,” he sighed, “Now I can die with some level of content…please, finish me.” He spoke tenderly, wrapping his arms around me as best he could, but he still persisted in his death. I slid my arm down from around his shoulder, keeping my face buried in his neck so I wouldn’t have to look into his eyes as I drove his dagger into his back, right between two of the vertebrae, killing him quickly and without any unnecessary bloodshed.
His body stiffened slightly as he passed on, and I stood there, wrapped in his dead body, crying tears of sadness and confusion until I passed out right there in his cold, lifeless arms.
