mmkay, this is for when something gently lands in water and whatnot.

STEP 1: Get an image of water, and import it to the stage. Like so: Image

STEP 2: Insert a new layer, and make ovals one inside of another. This is how it shud look: Image
Goatse, yes?

STEP 3: Delete/cut the white areas in between the lines, in a pattern that goes delete one, leave one, delete one, leave one. I added more ovals so that it wouldn't have such a big circle in the middle. do that, then select every other white part in the middle of the lines and delete them. Screen shot here: Image
DELETE THE PARTS YOU SEE SELECTED, K?

STEP 4: Scale the whole thing down and stretched, and also make it small. Like so: Image

STEP 5: Motion tween it so that it gets bigger. Image

STEP 6: insert a layer BETWEEN THE OVAL SHAPE AND THE IMAGE. Copy the image onto the new layer. I don't think I need to put a screen shot for that.

STEP 7: in the layer you made and put the water image or whatever you used, scale it with the free transform a little smaller in height. Easy.

STEP 8: Right click the layer with the shape and tween and select "mask"

Test movie and see the effect! Finished product: http://www.antiup.net/view/11956/
This should work perfectly. Feel free to mess around with it too.

SOME OF THE IMAGES ARE SCREWED UP BECAUSE THEY GOT MESSED UP IN PAINT.

EDIT: Ohshi

When I re uploaded it, it made it WAAAAY too slow. So uh, just raise the framerate when you do it.

Huh, that's interesting.

I learned this technique when I did work experience at VisualJazz for a week. They used this for a website for the australian navy.

Umm the example doesn't work since antiup has been neutralized.

EDIT: nvm, found it on stones bucket. A bad example though :/

Interesting... But I don't suppose you would happen to have a more advanced technique on hand, would you?

^^;

Edit : Well... They say the best person to ask on the internet for help is probably going to be yourself.

Now, if anyone has noticed yet, this method ends the animation with the ripple simply disappearing all of a sudden at the end. Which makes your animation look slightly broken, especially if looped a couple of times.

So for those who are interested and haven't found a solution to this yet and follow the extra step(s) below for the ripple to "disappear" slowly making it slightly smoother in loops.

Step 9 : Go to that new layer with the image with the shortened height and unlock it. (Assuming you followed the whole tutorial)

Step 10 : Click on that image and press F8. Choose Graphic for the Symbol type and click OK.

Step 11 : Go to the last frame of that image and create a new keyframe there.

Step 12 : Click on the image and under the properties tab (Usually at the bottom of the Flash program) and change the Color option to alpha and set it to 0%.

Step 13 : Add a motion tween in and voila, a ripple that disappears.

Optional : If you want the start of the ripple effect to have the same appearing effect, just apply the same steps to the starting of the animation. Note that there will be some minor changes is the steps. If anyone really wants it, post here or pm me or maybe the author of this tutorial himself/herself can do better.

The above step is optional because the start of the ripple is so small no one would normally notice it. So unless you are doing some high quality project and really need it, there is usually no need to go the extra length.

(Credit for this still all completely goes to the original creator of this tutorial)

Uhm, thanks for the lecture that I won't bother to read, but can you **** off?

It's a simple effect, not something for a pixar film.
