Theft, incorrect change, incorrect money entries, misplacing it in the cash register (placing large bills under smaller bills), etc. Things like that can lead to missing money.

maybe the register got knocked over during the shift, and some of the money fell out of sight for the person in the shift.

Or maybe your work place is doing a bit of a tax fraud which ends up with having money in the register that shouldn't be there and if the worker doesnt keep a good track of it it can easily turn in to a negative number at the end of the shift
