anything that other people, in their opinion, would consider pointless, but others find fun

I.E. everything.

I guess it just depends on the person then. I drink because scotch tastes good, but i dont smoke or do drugs because i dont have a reason to. And i dont find "Just because i can" to be a valid excuse for something that could be potentially harmful to someones health.

Drugs physically damage your brain, and once you're addicted you crave the drug to the point where you'll hurt others. If you want a thrill, go outside, go paintball, airsoft, get a job (if this is what you find boring engage in activities or hobbies aside from drugs)
Drugs aren't necessary to enjoy life.
edit: awful sorry to bring this up again, but I just wanted to share my $0.02

Not all drugs do, hell most don't. There is some temporary damage yes (depends on the drug) but if you were to space your drug use you would heal, your body is an amazing thing. Can't find the article where I read this but yeah. And yes you can get addicted to them and do horrible things, this is where willpower comes in, and I will be the first too admit drugs can **** up your life. I know many people who are addicted and their lives are forgive me for saying but udder crap. There are also people who die from rock climbing, who die from urban exploring, who die from driving ****ing cars in a circle. Addicting is not limited to drugs, you are all addicted to something, anyone who says different is a liar and doesn't understand what addiction is.
Why are you limiting everything to one hobby? I had a job but I quit to go to school, but I'm going to be hired by home depot full time with benefits. I love going outside and going for long walks and there are plenty of other things I do besides drugs. (just using myself as an example)
No they aren't who says they are? Is any hobby you do necessary? No but you do it because it's fun ad you enjoy it.

i'm pretty sure cosmo already went over this already. it's the typical "why do this when you can do this" response. why do anything in life if there's always an alternative? paintball has underlying risk factors to it. so does airsoft. what if i have a rare disease that if i ever get a nasty welt on my skin, will cause me to go into a coma? you can't go around saying the things people do are wrong and they should supplement them with things, personally like to do if the things these people do aren't hurting anyone else
oh and people have to go outside to get their drugs. can't order them over the internet, so tick that alternative off the list. you make it sound as if anyone who's ever done drugs in their life is some kind of loser with no life when i could name you plenty of successful people who have or currently do drugs. some of them are musicians, so it's kind of their job
and i've never actually seen a druggy "hurt others" except for that episode of It's Always Sunny where Mac and Dee get dropped in the middle of the hood and asked a cokehead for directions and he pulled a gun on them

It's not their fault, everything that they see and hear about drugs always has a negative connotation to it. So naturally they are biased towards drugs (while binging on beer), the people who do drugs and lead a "normal" life are there. You just never hear of them because THEY LEAD A NORMAL LIFE. You wouldn't guess that they do drugs because they assume all people who do drugs are filthy losers. My guess is you all know drug users but you just don't know it, simply because you can't tell.

I was naming paintball and airsoft off as suggestions, examples even. They weren't what I was telling him to do as an alternative to drugs. People go to jail for assault and other shit just for drugs everyday.
And it's really the person's preference as to whether they do drugs or not. I just think it's unhealthy (opinion) although they are trying to legalize marijuana (god, no more debates on these please). And the first high you get with a drug is the best it will ever be, and when you get bored of inadequate 'thrills' as we'll call them, you keep upping the dosage, then you attempt new drugs (cocaine, heroin) and the first high you get is amazing, then you continue to up the dose (overdose mostly) and if that doesn't do it, you move onto meth, opiates, amphetamines, and then you continue to up the dosage, ruining your body and mind, eventually getting addicted no matter how much willpower you have. Unless you have iron balls and can do 50 cocaine injections a day, you're bound to get addicted. It really depends on the person and how much you do the drugs though I guess.
It's just my personal opinion. I mean - why should I do drugs when I can just hang out with my friends and not have to take a substance to have a feeling of happiness? I want to be happy on my own accord.

people also go to jail for assault without drugs, people kill because you've scratched their car, because you messed with their girlfriend, for little bits of green paper. People always do bad and dumb shit, no matter what they're on or what the cause is.
Ah yes the the gateway effect, this has been disprove countless times by actual scientists. Not your parents, not the cops, but actual scientists with science. You see it sounds good and like a possible senerio, but unless those people are complete idiots then they actually realize what is going on and take the steps to stop it. Those who don't are careless, the same type of people who drive recklessly and play with fire.
Again you assume all people who use drugs are losers who depends on it to feel happy, this is a big problem man because it's not true. not even close. Honestly I didn't even know how much damage dare has done to you guys until recently. The people who are dependent on drugs are also the same type of people who are dependent on the internet, or on watching tv, or eating for happiness. My life wouldn't be a horrible mess without drugs, it would just be my same life without drugs, thats it thats all. this coming from an actual drug user.

Quote from RazrBladeI just think it's unhealthy (opinion) .
NO. THAT IS NOT AND CAN NEVER BE A MOTHER****ING OPINION. This is absolute from the debate now, but you're saying something that is either a fact or a lie and disguise it as an opinion in the hopes of being able to defend it by saying an opinion can't be wrong. And you should rot in hell because of that, because it's one of the worst things people do in debates. You can't say "In my opinion, 1+2 equals 5" and expect everyone to respect the fact that it's your opinion and is therefore subjective, because it is a cold hard fact that you're wrong.

Sorry, but that's maybe the very one thing that always makes me insane. I hear this so often, it's not even funny. "An opinion cannot be wrong" is the worst teaching ever.
