Thats definitely a very heavy part of the subtext. If it was written today, they'd be gay for sure. It would be an intentional subtext. But I think in Tolkien's time, it was a little more understated, so he may not have realized it. Sort of like Arthur Conan Doyle with the Sherlock Holmes stories.
