But this only applies when you're trying to memorize things quickly (for example all digits of the phone number). So basically there's not enough time and repetition to move first digits to the long term memory so usually you're left with the ending numbers that are still in the short term memory. But if you were given like 5 minutes to memorize a 10 digits combo you should have no problems there.

My method for learning new words, is looking up or hearing a new word I like the sound of. Look up and understand the meaning, trying to put it into sentences in my head and then spend some time applying it to actual interaction.

Example: Zounds
Basically to express surprise, sometimes in a comedic way. It also works sarcastically.

Zounds! That insult really hurt my feelings!

Not that I know what I'm talking about.

that's not a legitimate use of the word. he meant "people are doing math".

your confusion is understandable, since no one is doing any fucking math in the first place.

I'm gonna be 100% serious. I have no idea what you are talking about.
Also I'm someone who will forget things randomly, or remember something to eventually forget it. So i could never memorize 50 words a day xD

He's saying that if you know for a fact that 2+2=4 then say that shit with confidence. Be confident in what you say and be serious about it.

He's also saying if you're not 100% that 3+3=6 then don't go around acting like you know 3+3=6 unless you're absolutely sure.

I'd be impressed if you could remember the majority of those words a year from now.

The thing is, when you learn a word, you start seeing it used everywhere thereafter. If you read every day, like me, then that goes a long way to preventing you from forgetting. Not only do I learn 40 words, but I have to learn the chinese characters for every word simultaneously. Could probably do 100 if this were an easy language like French. You can never really learn any word in a day, but you can become acquainted to it, to the point that you can recognise it in text/speech. Whenever I learn a new word, the first thing I do is look up sentences for context, and I'll read 10 or so example sentences to get a feel for its use. The process takes 4-5 hours for 40 words. I don't forget because I review at night before I sleep, after I wake up, and in between with an SRS system. Anyway, this is the percentage of correct/incorrect responses I had to every flashcard I reviewed over the last 3 weeks of about 1000 words:

The average number of reviews for each card is about 4-5. Some cards I will be forced to study again tomorrow, some in 5 days, some in 10, 20, 40 ect. Depending on how easy/hard every previous review was.

But I agree, not many people could do what I am doing.

actually learning information little by little over a long period of time really helps retain it.

But why are you learning these words? Are these latin words and you're studying law or something?

I'm learning basic Spanish, so yeh
I would try what Cronos does, but I probably won't use Spanish until college or maybe end of high school, so it's kind of a timewaster
eh

So, I just realized I've been a member for 2 years now, and in March, I'll have been a moderator for 2 years. I'm feeling kinda proud of myself for never having any real extended absences or anything with my time here.

If he has to learn the Chinese characters at the same time I guess he's learning Mandarin. Although, since Chinese characters bear no relation to pronunciation, I guess it could be a highly experimental way of learning the names of every known star system. There's no reason you couldn't assign a random character to each of them.

Hello. Aspiring anatomy student here!

I've never tried studying another language seriously so I'm not sure how this will translate. I think it is referred to as 'chunking' if you want to get psychological. Anyway say you have a list of 50 words. I would break them mentally into 5 groups of 10 separating them according to how they may relate to one another. I found that in anatomy, it was much more easy to remember stuff when you learned them according to the regions of the body.

If we were modded at the same time, March. I was just checking when all the "new" mods signed in for the first time (when I first arrived) and noticed I was turned mod March 6, 2013, about 2 months after I officially joined as a member in January.

I halfway want to be a mod, and halfway don't. It's one of those weird things that seems like it'd be cool at first, then you get dick-slapped by the not-fun.
