Drag the sound into the timeline, click on it to bring up the audio options then click "Edit..."

Drag each square around to control not just the volume, but the volume of each ear. By clicking anywhere else in the sound wave you can create a new square, so you can create fading effects as well.

I'd also recommend getting Audacity if you don't have it. Audacity has much more advanced sound editing features, and any editing can be made into a new sound effect (in Flash the edit only applies to that one sound), as well as converting .mp3's to .wav files, which work a lot better with Flash.

You can even cancel background noise if you're recording with it.
