Personally not sure if pinging someone could help instantly. Like, do you think that you should prepare a proper topic first before doing so with particular people to make it goes smooth, or else they would feel you bother them much? Yet saying "how are you" feels kind of awkward as it would grow a random impression that you're really eager to know their real life situation, while some people just don't want to talk about them because it might be too personal.

When I notify someone on IRC, I usually dive straight into a conversation in whatever topic I want to. Sometimes I'd say hi, but mostly I just go straight into talking about whatever topic I wish to talk about with the person.

Also, the actual term isn't pinging. Pinging is a term used for testing latency between you and the person you've decided to ping. It's more formally known as a CTCP ping command. Highlighting or notifying somebody would be a more accurate way to say that you've typed someone's name to get their attention. :D
