sooo... this has been getting some (largely slanderous) media attention lately, so you may or may not have heard about it. mainstream media has gotten caught up in the misogyny smokescreen and largely refuses to look past all that to approach the real issue, which is simply corruption and collusion in journalism.

here's a handy infographic that can fill you in on the basics:

and here's a slightly more detailed account of events:

This is getting out of hand, the first time I heard about this was about the creation of Vivian James and the misadventures of that one Zoe person.

I thought it would die down but I guess I'm wrong. Wow, there's a war in almost every part of the world.

really, this whole thing could have disappeared on day 1 if kotaku released and apology and reviewed their journalistic policies. but instead they attacked gamers, so it has become clear that this is not going to die any time soon. what anti-ggers don't realize is that gamers don't ever give up. encountering enemies to them means that they are going in the right direction. they are used to grinding slowly towards a seemingly impossible goal. the more resistance they meet the more experience they gain. they learn quickly, and opposition only makes them stronger.

I've actually been wondering what this whole #gamergate debacle was all about. Thanks for the info dump.

So this could have all been avoided if Zoe Quinn kept her mouth shut and Kotaku actually apologized day 1?

i'd say so. but they refused to accept any criticism, and instead mounted a smear campaign - which happens to be a primo example of the kind of shitty biased colluding journalism we're fighting against.

here's a nice article for anybody who's heard what the media has been saying about GG:

Actually. A different forum I visit had a thread on this that started yesterday. So rather than retyping what I said there. I'll just copy and paste my thoughts on GamerGate here.

EDIT:
And Scarecrow. Internet Aristocrat's videos would be a good source of information to put in the OP.

I won't bother adding stuff to the OP unless this thread just yet, maybe if the thread picks up a bit more later on. Those are good videos though.

Bl3u, here's an article you might like that shuts down a lot of the SJW rhetoric: http://unprofessionalportfolio.wordpress.com/2014/10/03/an-issue-with-agendas/

From the point of view of the journalist, their agenda is a positive thing. They are trying to get more female protagonists in games and making games, trying to get more LGBT representation in games, and trying to get more racial diversity in games.

So when readers say that their sendup of Final Fantasy for having no playable female characters and the op-ed about heterosexual white man being life’s “easiest difficulty setting” are bad because they are agenda-driven, they react with confusion and hostility. Its easy to assume the majority of gamers are just misogynist assholes when faced with this reaction, but in my opinion the truth is not so black and white.

Gamers aren’t against progress, they’re just against your approach to progress.

In simplest terms the gamers who oppose “agenda-driven” reporting are supporters of bottom-up progress; which in this case is providing diverse people opportunities to make games that represent a diverse world. The journalists in question seem to support a top-down method; tearing down already completed works for not meeting their lofty standards.

I also saw this post on the early history of /gg/, which I thought would be worth sharing:

Entertaining ideals. So essentially, it's all about the fact that there is biased?
I mean, I get it to a certain extent, but why is it such a huge deal? People threw money around, made things disappear and otherwise. That's great. That happens more in politics more than anything.

i don't think that's a good thing either, and i suspect tackling that sort of corruption might be the logical next step after gamergate brings down corruption in the gaming industry. nobody should just accept corruption and take it lying down, but so far gamers are the only people who have bothered standing up to it. gamers are taking on a multi million dollar corrupt corporate media giant and winning. i don't think it will just stop there once they're done.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good step. A very very good step, however I find it just entertaining that gamers are the ones taking that first step.

I forget in which video he mentioned this, but Internet Aristocrat made a pretty saline point about this. The 4th estate had basically crashed and burned due to corruption in coverage and whatnot. Which led to it being unreliable (Think Fox news or CNN)

So the 5th estate (Internet journalism) was born in the hopes of creating non biased content for consumers. And basically being a substitute for what the 4th estate failed to do. But, then this shit happened, which is why I think there's such heavy backlash for these journalists.

There wasn't much going on before then besides small shit like Anita Sarkeesian and the backlash she received, or the nepotism issue with the community manager on the Mighty no.9 forum.
