You don't know how you got here, but you seemed to have found yourself somewhere you haven't been to before. It feels…abandoned, for a long time. Write about your character searching for a way out.

This place didn't feel empty.

She sat up and pulled herself to her feet, gaze shifting from the walls and single door on the east side down to the rotting floorboards. The silence was unnerving, but her mouth remained shut in fear speaking would lead to a reply. Stepping forward, the metal knob ground against its hold when she turned it before pushing through to a short hall. The house seemed abandoned, but there was no pests or cobwebs to be found. She felt a burning in her lungs and the rhythm of her heart until she finally shut the door behind her, to prevent some unseen thing from invading her.

Fear overcame her curiosity, leading her to ignore the other two doors in the hall so she could turn the corner and proceed to the larger room ahead. With every step, her head was light but rushing with the thoughts of something behind her. At the same time, turning around could either quickly prove or disprove the theory. Like not knowing delayed a possibly inevitable fate, there was some sort of cat in a box theory associated with that sort of thing, right?

The larger space had similar features to a living room, and as she stepped she couldn't even bear to near the center, almost worried she would be swarmed at all sides. It looked empty, with the sofa and coffee table lacking a coat of dust to contradict. It couldn't be abandoned. Her breathing was short and hard, almost like gasping as she tried to storm by the massive room only to wonder if fast movements would bring chase with something faster. She hardly recalled passing the kitchen, losing all sense of time and rationality. There were windows when her pace slowed, but looking out them could bring about things that lurked on the outside. It was dark out and no shapes could be picked out in the momentary glace she spared.

Catching herself, she pulled back towards the windows but only to see if a door stood near them, never daring to look out them despite the silent night excluding crickets singing. There was none, her lungs began to almost fill with something intrusive, obstructing her breathing. It was her panic, but she was helpless to stop it. She gasped, hoping the cold air would calm the burning, but it only fueled it. The noise she made could have been heard by anyone in this house, even if it looked empty.

Escape felt useless now, she felt cornered, caught like a shoplifter. Her arms folded over her chest and she closed her eyes but that made it worse. All sorts of manifestations of her fear were unleashed in the dark of shut eyes. She questioned her fate as unknowingly her imagination would be the only thing invading her.

She screamed in an empty house.
