Yeah basically in my opinion is that he should be scored as a 3D anim and not as a flash anim. Cuz there are many differences where things in 3D might be easier to do than in flash, and vice versa. I'm not saying 3D is easier than flash overall. In fact, i think he should get a bit of a bonus since it's 3D. But he shouldn't get a big bonus for doing something that's hard for a flash animator, because it might be much easier to do in 3D. He also shouldn't be judged poorly for not doing something well that may be hard for 3D But easy for flash. This is my opinion, judges can judge how they want. I just think judging it the same way might make the results a bit flawed is all.
So, what, stick me in my own category cuz it happens to be a slightly different medium? I feel like you have a misconception of the comparisons between 2D Flash animation versus a 3D animation. The thing that makes 3D "easier" than 2D is being able to "tween" the animation: whereas with 2D/Flash you basically have to frame by frame it. The thing is though, tweening by itself is pretty hard to do to get it look right. And I've already set myself up for even more difficulty because Im worrying about 3 axes instead of 2. If you happened to see that demo I posted,
that 7 seconds of animation took over a month. Frankly I don't know if I'll even be able to finish 2 minutes worth of animation in the time remaining.
Here's the thing: when I first started in animation I always looked up to the old school animator ToughLuck. The dude made some of the most epic stick shootouts ever, and I still have copies of them sitting on my hard drive, and Im pretty sure some of them can't be found on the internet. I look to them for inspiration to this day. I just want to make a shootout in the style that he did. In his later animations he integrated a lot of 3D stuff but still had the classic 2D/flat look. That's what Im going for.
In other words what I'll end up with probably won't be too dissimilar to the average 2D animation in the competition. The angles are basically a bonus. I'm just way more comfortable animating in 3D than 2D, as I find Flash way too limited for what I want to achieve. I hope that makes sense, and doesn't come across as cocky.
Tl;dr my entry won't be
that different from the other entrants in the same category, as I'm sure there are some great animators across the board.
