Oh yes, how did I forget it.
The Inheritance Trilogy. Eragon and Eldest - Christopher Paolini. The third book isn't out yet, though.
They are awesome books. The first one they made a movie out of last year. The book is MUCH better than the movie. They just totally beat the shit out of it and turned it in to crap for a film.
Bottom line: READ THESE BOOKS, NAO!

The Kingdom of this World by Alejo Carpentier
It's about the Haitian rebellion and mixes magic up with reality, it's very fun. And a really short read too, it's like 180 pages.

If you need to be very depressed for some special occasion you might find Good Night Mister Tom a very good read.
They made me read it when I was 7 years old for school. It has a part where the mum straps a baby to a pipe in the basement and the main character who is a 8 year old boy keeps it alive with his body heat and it dies in his arms.

Quote from "Wikipedia"Goodnight Mister Tom (also Good Night, Mr. Tom) is a 1981 novel by Michelle Magorian. It follows a young boy named William Beech who is evacuated from London during the air-raids of World War II, and put into the care of an elderly reclusive man named Tom Oakley.

Yeah. It made me sick. Literally.
And then they made us watch the movie...
Now can you see why I changed schools?
