Man I would make a post but I can't think of anything with the kind of class nish's list has.

I've got movies to start watching.

Try watching one "class" movie a week, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you make progress. I still do that once a week and I'm amazed by how many extraordinary films I come across.

That movie makes me hungry and depressed at the fact that I will never taste that quality of sushi ever. Opened my eyes to the intricacies of sushi making.

btw, how do you guys keep up with good foreign movies? I want to start diversifying.

That movie makes me ravenous just thinking about it.

As for keeping up with good movies, see above. Just google some basic like like "Top Foreign films to see" or something along those lines. Each movie will organically lead to another.

Envoy, Jiro dreams of Sushi would have made it to my list had I allowed documentaries.

My top 10 documentaries off the top of the my head would be :

1) Jiro Dreams of Sushi
2) Blood of the Beasts
3) Hearts of Darkness
4) The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior
5) Man with a Movie Camera
6) Sans Solei
7) Crumb
8) Grizzly Man
9) The Thin Blue Line
10) Waltz with Bashir

EDIT: I AM ASHAMED OF MYSELF FOR FORGETTING THIS. PLEASE PLACE JODOROWSKY'S DUNE AT THE NO. 1 SPOT. THANK YOU.

I recently watched Filth which is a Scottish film so I had a bit of a hard time understanding the dialogue, but I still really liked it though. I think it shifted the story really well from one point to something completely different. I think it's one of the films that are better watched if you know nothing about it prior to watching it, because I went in blind and I was pretty surprised with everything lmao. I haven't really watched a lot of films though, so if anyone's watched this, care to recommend similar stuff? Like, just anything good where the story is very character-driven would be cool.

I haven't seen much on Nish's list but I did thoroughly enjoy the ones that I have seen (The Clockwork Orange is one of my favorite films and is my favorite Kubrick film) so I might be saving that one and try to check them out.

I watched half of John Wick last night, can't wait to finish it after work. I'll check out City of God some time soon as well

I liked John Wick a lot, its a good, suspend-disbelief-and-enjoy-the-ride film. You'll love City of God, I'm sure. Let me know how that goes.

They're pop entertainment, but all 3 are actually quite sophisticated films (and I know you're not saying they aren't) . Even the chaos of Monty Python is fueled by a deep understanding of how the human psyche reacts humorously to absurdity.

I wanted to see Filth because I like James McAvoy. Whats your in-depth verdict?

Also, yes. Clockwork Orange fucking rules.

I stopped regulalry checking reviews after the passing of Roger Ebert, but he was pretty much my benchmark 95% of the time. I occasionally visit the blog of a guy named James Berardinelli on Reelviews who writes well and gives focused opinions.

I loved the film because the main character's development was done surprisingly well, especially since it happened gradually yet it started from one place and like ended up in the opposite side of the spectrum (but I guess to be more precise, he was who was to the core from start to finish, but my feelings about him was the one that changed drastically). Just overall to me it was thought-provoking because the theme is something that kind of intrigues me (which is also why I love The Clockwork Orange). I don't want to divulge much information though because like I said, I think it's best to watch it without knowing anything about it. Maybe after you've watched it we can talk about it.

James McAvoy did his character extremely well. If you just want to watch him perform, then watch this.

I looked up "Tahimik" and he's apparently from my city, and we probably share a similar ethnic background.

I somehow suddenly want to watch his films but he's in the middle of levels 4 and 5 the infographic says I'm not ready for it yet :(

The Man From Earth I heard was a really good film that happens in one room. I've been meaning to get to that one, I hadn't heard of it since a few days ago.

I love, love Man from Earth but I don't know if its one of my favourite films.

It shames and pains me that I completely overlooked the following movies in my original list which belong among the very top. It didn't violate any of my rules and no directors are repeated.

1) The Big Lebowski - Coen Brothers
2) Boogie Night - Paul Thomas Anderson
3) Children of Men - Alfonso Cuaron
4) The Man who would be King - John Huston
5) The Silence of the Lambs - Jonathan Demme
6) Birdman - Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu
7) Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Guy Ritchie
8) Adaptation - Spike Jonze
9) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Michael Gondry
10) Evil Dead II - Sam Raimi
11) Dead Alive - Peter Jackson
12) La Jetee - Chris Marker
13) Young Frankenstein - Mel Brooks
14) Private Parts - Betty Thomas
15) Thank You for Smoking - Jason Reitman
16) In the Company of Men - Neil Labute
17) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Terry Gilliam
18) Greed - Eric Von Stroheim
19) Elite Squad 1+2 - Jose Padilha
20) Pan's Labrynth - Guillermo Del Toro

I can't fucking believe I missed these. At any given point, I've often claim that these movies individually are the best movies ever made.

funny you should mention him, "Perfumed Nightmare" is right up next on the list of movies i'm going to watch. best movie title ever? it's also one of the top favorite movies of a lot of people i know online
EDIT: i've finished watching it. it was excellent, especially with the extremely low production values and budget it had, which managed to add personality and intimacy rather than detracting from the film.

Love that film. The only reason its not on my list is because I already have a Scorcese movie, Goodfellas on it.

Just because their imitators suck, it doesn't mean that their work was without any basis. By that same logic, Akira Kurosawa is a terrible film maker because his style of melodrama is what led to a multiple generations of awful Japanese tele-dramas.

Also, I am terribly ashamed when I see I have left even more movies off my list which I consider my favourite:

1) Alien - Ridley Scott
2) Blind Beast - Yazuso Masumura
3) Eyes without a Face - Georges Franjau
4) Onibaba - Kaneto Shindo
5) Blue Velvet - David Lynch
6) Hana-Bi - Takeshi Kitano
7) Fellini Satyricon - Federico Fellini
8) Branded to Kill - Seijun Suzuki
9) The Cell - Tarsem
10) Woman in the Dunes - Hiroshi Teshigahara
11) American Beauty - Sam Mendes
12) Death by Hanging - Nagisa Oshima
13) Elephant - Gus Van Sant
14) Sword of Doom - Kichachi Okomoto
15) A Fish Called Wanda - John Cleese / Charles Crichton
16) The Shawshank Redemption - Frank Darabont
17) District 9 - Neill Blomkamp
18) They Way Home - Lee Jyong Hyang
19) Two Halftimes in Hell - Zoltan Fabri
20) Talk to Her - Pedro Almodovar
