Ikr? You gotta love Kirby. Besides, if you eat other players, you can then (in certain versions) use their own powers, thus getting even MORE abilities. Secondly, he can fly (or float). Thus, if you fall off a stage, you can usually make it back.

charizard can also fly, but not as well as the others. R.O.B. and Snake have extremely good recoveries that are basically like flying.

R.O.B.'s recovery is actually better than Kirby's flying. At least in Brawl.

Personally my preference on characters are ones who have an incredible air game, are simple, or can camp. In the air the opponent can't punish you as much so I picked up Meta Knight, Jigglypuff and Kirby.
I like Pac-man and Ness because they can stall you the hell out. PK Thunder and fire along with really powerful grabs and aerials makes ness a surprisingly easy character to play dodgy with. Unfortunately, Ness' recovery is shit so I don't focus on him much...
Pac-man is all about avoidance though, so I'm working on him.
Then simple characters? Well, I mess around with Sheik and Rosa so I can understand them for future opponents, but... I mostly like FALCON.... PAWWWNCH in this category. Jigglypuff is also pretty straight forward.

You most likely haven't played against a good Link if that's the case. Spamming in Smash is like the easiest thing to work around since there are so many different options.

Smash64 - Pikachu
Melee - Marth, Pikachu
Brawl - Toon Link, Lucas
Smash4 - Toon Link, Lucas, Mii Brawler(the only one I play competitively, but only if customs are allowed)
