I only ask because that's how I thought it has always been. During the Merge, some FA users were asking stone they couldn't register as certain names because they were already in the SP database, to which stone made it happen, purportedly by renaming the other name as something else. There were also cases in the past where noobs and trolls would pose as actual prestigous animators. What if those animators suddenly decided to come back as was also the case back then? There'd have to be a way to take existing usernames in the system.

Oh and there was that one time the Mods pulled a prank by renaming each other using existing names, purportedly by switching the old names around.

I dont think emails are directly linked to a user account with an existing name that was changed. When a username is renamed, its entire label is changed. The old throwaway email will relate to the changed label, not the original.
