If you want to the axe kick look realistic, then you must make the sticks torso go foward as the leg goes up, and go back as the leg goes down.

To piggyback off of what Conflate. is saying, for the axe kick, the entire body should be moving forward. As the foot starts coming down, the torso rotates a bit backwards to maintain balance. On top of that in your practice animation you're starting off with the front leg. To get a bit more force behind it you can have your character step forward and use the back leg for the kick. Of course you can still use the front leg if you so please, but it would lack the "oomph" that the back leg would have.

A quick reference can be seen here:

Actually, another way to think about it is if you follow the same general movements you did for the second kick, but just raise the leg higher like you would for an axe kick, you'd have a pretty alright looking movement.

Exactly what they said, studying from a reference is best way to learn.. You definitely should work on your posing, but I think the main problem is your easing, space and timing. When you push your legs up it wont just stop in the air for 4 frames, right? like what you see in the video his feet would keep going until he pushes it back into the ground.

I think the bouncing ball is great way to start understanding easing.

you can try animating that yourself.
