Hewitt's old forum game of Rumble, the one where people bet on powers and duked it out in an arena, intrigued me a lot. I thought I would try my hand at designing a game similar to it: something both a bit simpler, while also allowing more freedom of coming up with your own super abilities.

Here's a summary of the game to see if you might like it:

All players stand in a circular arena, ready to fight each other. After the game's over, everyone will battle each other by hitting everyone with basic attacks that do a set amount of damage... But the game takes place in the phases before the actual battle. We'll be running a number of rounds where people prepare for it first.
In phase 1 of each round, every player will post 1 EFFECT that they would like to have. These effects can be anything that you desire. You won't want anything too crazy though, because in phase 2, everyone will vote for powers to be veto'd out and removed from play. HOWEVER: If your power gets Veto'd, your character gains basic attack damage. The discussion and planning ahead that arises from this system is surprising.
You want to create the most absurd, overpowered fighter possible.

If that sounded like a fun game to you, then here are the specifics:
-All powers must be made in a context of people fighting in an arena... imagine this is a band of RHG fighters about to duke it out or something. I won't allow effects like "I win the game" or "remove X player" or anything that's obviously dumb.
-You can vote to veto more than one power. You can vote the same number of times as half the cast, rounded up, so if there are 8 players you can veto 4 powers.
-For a power to be veto'd, it must be voted for by one person less than half the cast. 3 votes will veto a power if there are 8 players.
-Once combat begins, every person will basic attack every enemy at once, turn by turn until there's only one survivor. To balance this out, players will have very large HP pools and basic attacks will start fairly weak. I'll do the calculations when the final pre-game round is over.
-There will be 5 rounds. Use this time wisely to get as powerful as possible.

Just post if you'd like to sign up. Due the nature of the game I might join as well since this all happens on the thread and there's no way for the dev to cheat :p

Can you do a quick example of how this game works? Rumble was confusing enough.

Yeah, totally.
In short, you don't actually battle each other. The game is all in trying to acquire the strongest powers.

If 4 people are playing in phase 1, each would make a post saying an effect that they want. Let's say they want...
Player 1-"I take 10% reduced damage" (He says something light like this so that people will vote out someone else's more intimidating wish)
P2-"My basic attacks do triple damage"
P3-"I'm invincible every 2 rounds of combat"
P4-"I get 20 extra basic attack damage."

The players would then be able to vote for 1 effect they want to remove from the game. This is because they have votes equal to half the number of players minus 1. If a power got 2 votes to be removed, then it would be removed and the unfortunate players would get more basic attack damage instead.

If you want to kick massive ass, you'll want powers that compliment each other. This way even harmless-sounding powers might win you the game. Let's say that in Round 1 you asked for the ability to heal 1/4 of the damage people hit you with, and it doesn't get veto'd. Round 2 you manage to reduce the amount of damage you take. Round 3, you get the ability to deal damage back to your attackers. All together, people might actually kill themselves before they kill you, and you still have your own basic attacks and 2 more rounds to get more powers.

The actual combat is just all simulated. I'd have the 4 players hit all of their opponents at the same time simultaneously and just run it turn by turn until only one person was still alive.

We could have a practice game before a "real" game if people wanted to :o

Profit off my idea huh? Wait until this one is over so I can profit off your game by making an arena competition about being the MOST OP BASTARD EVER. In fact, you win the moment you sign up and say "I FIREBALL THE ARENA I WIN"

But yeah, your game is basically 1000 Blank White Cards, Fighters Edition. Considering it. I'll sign up if you don't have enough people. If you do get a full house, I'm out.

Challenge Accepted then, I'm in.

Question Devour: Can we do Secret Moves? Like, attacks that aren't obvious in their effects or is it all under your discretion as to what is fair?

I'm not sure what that would entail... Your wish will follow what it says to the word, so as long as a meaningful effect can be derived from that then it's fine.
It also has to be in the context of superheroes duking it out, like the 1st rule says. So no effects like "If I take damage I win the game" rofl

But what if I'm a Sorcerer and I did something like plunge the city into an alternate dimension where taking damage is actually beneficial.

I'm just testing the limits here. Technically this is viable

Hmm yeah if that didn't get veto'd out that sounds fine to me. If no one died ever then I'd have to do something on the fly like "Whoever has the most hp wins," which makes sense but adds a neat thing where the guy who took the most damage ended up winning.
