Lavernius Mylarc & Faye Petralis, Plaza of the Monolith

"Oh," the lady smiled, from her brown, sea tanned hair and her dress had a neckline that reached down nearly to her bosom and skirt cut up to her thighs. "I am simply here to enjoy the festivities. I take it from your hair, you are a crownlander, yes?"

Faye could make out her friend from the top of Atlas, conversing with a Narbondese she did not recognize. The people around slowly stopped their complaints, as it became apparent that the Legionnaires were not going to give an inch.

Thalia Valgeiros, the Dancing Horseman

Do you enjoy killing, Thalia? The shadow turned its head to the window, it seemed to be bothered by the noise outside. The feet of the shadow began to fade, or was it...growing legs?

Marianna Laranis, Izukani Quarter - The Stanky Leg Inn

Mari could only hear the steps and wait. The first person she saw in come down the staircase was Lord Ashtoreth Vysterious herself. Following behind were two Thaa'nas Swords and a couple more Legionnaires. The Commander approached Mari and looked down from her helmet, which was created in the visage of a roaring panther and her gold piercing eyes judged further. She stood a good foot taller that the heiress of Laranis, her hand on the staff of her weapon, the infamous Dreaded Striker, a halberd with a larger blade than usual.

"Marianna Laranis," Ashtoreth repeated. "Where have I heard that last name before?"

The Lord Commander simply glanced to her side and nodded. The Legionnaires quickly moved in and grabbed Mari's hands, binding them.

"Your assets in Salvation Point will be seized for the Empire and subordinates be trialed for their crimes," the Lord Commander continued. "Do not resist."

Lavernius nodded grinning, "Is it that obvious? And I'm guessing by your beauty you're Narbondese? The festivities hm? Then I recommend the marketplace, I know some of the Izukanese artists there and their quality is something I can vouch for. Look for a woodcarver named Yasuno Itsuka, I'm sure she can make you something that you will like." He looked back to see Faye coming to him and looked back. "I'm sorry, I promised a friend to show her around the marketplace, hope to see you there miss?" He paused and a smile played on his lips. "You still haven't told me your name."

As the authorities flooded the room, Mari sat on the table, unfazed and impassive. As the Lord General stepped through the doorway, Mari's eyes scanned the woman head to toe. We are not that important for such a high ranking officer to conduct the operation. There is more to it. When confronted by Lord Ashtoreth, the woman simply smiled in her face.

"Hey Ash, how are you?" she jovially asked, disregarding for what actually was going on (*). As the Legionnaires began binding her, she gave them her hands, facilitating their job.

"Does it look like I'm resisting?" she stated with nonchalance. Mari then stood up from the table and squared up with the Commander, intent to show that she was not to back down.

(*)Mari and Ash don't actually know each other. Mari knows about her as the Lord Commander of the Legion, but no personal connection was ever created between the two. Mari is simply mocking her.

"I feel like I do what is necessary to maintain a certain balance. I'd be a liar if I said watching the life slip out of someone doesn't stimulate some kind of pleasure deep inside of me, though." Thalia closed the book, got up from her bed and stashed the book back in it's hiding place. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. On the low of the exhale she whirled her arm towards the corner of the room, launching two knives towards the shadow. Two thuds that sounded like steel stabbing wood. You already killed me, y'know. "It must be awfully hard for you to cope with being dead, especially when the person who killed you doesn't even remember your face or name. You're as much of a shadow as I am." Perhaps, but you aren't dead yet. "Oh really? I can't seem to tell the difference." Thalia stepped back inside of her leather suit, taking care again to not poke herself or trigger a blade. She retrieved her dagger from underneath her pillow and slid the blade in it's hiding place against Thalia's back. The still darkness in the corner of the room beckoned unto her until she cautiously retrieved her cloak. Wrapping herself in the cloak, Thalia retrieved the necklace and two fingers from the jewelry box and stashed them away before leaving the Dancing Horseman.

Where are we going? "The Izukani sell incense that help calm me down and suppress you all for a while. Hopefully they convince you and the others to let me work undisturbed tonight so I can get back to enjoying the festival." Thalia didn't have to maneuver through the plaza to realize something was happening in the Izukani Quarter. She found an alleyway and scaled a building tall enough to give her a good vantage point to see what was going on. Legionnaires were maintaining a perimeter, keeping people from entering. She lowered her body as much as possible on the roof to try and conceal herself as she looked on curiously. Perhaps they had stumbled across one of her old coworkers. That would be interesting. Regardless, they needed to wrap this show of authority up so she could purchase what she needed. You could just go down there, you know. "No, I think I'll just spectate."

Atlas slightly swaying to the sides as he walked and Faye atop of it, the mage made her way back to Lavernius. On her way the girl still had kind of a blank expression, but once she got close enough to the man, the smile on her face was back already. "Well it seems like you're a real natural when it comes to making friends..." Catching the very last bit of their discussion, Faye slid down the automaton's arm and smiled to both of them giving Lavernius an impish, suggestive, yet discreet glance. "...Must be the hair." She added with a giggle. "Anyway, looks like they're just getting rid of all the...'filth'..." The woman seemed to struggle a little with letting this word out. "...before the Emperor's arrival, to keep everything nice and perfect for the time of his visit..."

Lavernius Mylarc & Faye Petralis, Plaza of the Monolith

"My name?" the Narbondese paused for a moment before smiling. "Desiree. That's all you need to know for now, crownlander. We will see each other probably, your hair is unmistakable, so I'll find you."

With that, the woman left just as Faye entered the scene.

Thalia Valgeiros, the Dancing Horseman

All I hear is noise. The shadow flickered and became fuzzy for a moment before steadying itself.

Thalia, from her vantage point could see the circle of Legionnaires around some place in the Izukani Quarter. She could spot five, maybe seven Thaa'nas in the perimeter as well. Out of one of the structures came out Lord Ashtoreth, her armor and helmet easily distinguishable from the rest of the troop. Behind her was possibly the scoundrel who missed a beat and got caught, flanked by three Thaa'nas and squad of legionnaires.

Marianna Laranis, Izukani Quarter

"Thank you for you cooperation," Vysterious replied coolly, unfazed by the venom that Mari's words had. With that, all who were in the War Room began to leave and left the Stanky Leg Inn. When all were finally out Ashtoreth spoke: "Search the inn then demolish it then scour Salvation Point for her allies."

The nearest lieutenant nodded and left without another word. Several legionnaires and two Thaa'nas entered the structure and began their search. "You will be put to Salvation Point's jail but I'm sure you've already been acquainted with its walls. So I will be sure to make it a new experience for you," Ashtoreth said.

[TIME SKIP]
Evening

The day for Vadalias part in the festival draws to a close with the arrest of Marianna Laranis, a criminal lord of the ports of Aladea. Salvation Point's jail1, now holds one of Aladea's most wanted crime bosses and is guarded by several squads of legionnaires. Thaa'nas from the nearby temple have been asked to assist. Lavernius and Faye, having enjoyed an afternoon in the Market of Six, return to the Dancing Horseman to rest while Thalia remains on top of everything, the rooftops serving as platforms to her next leap of faith.

As night came in, people began to pack up while others entered the inns. It was the usual night time for Salvation Point and the air filled with the smell of ale and bread. Songs sung beautifully and badly echoed in the night.

Marianna Laranis, Salvation Point Jail
Mari found herself behind bars in a six by six cell block made of granite, her ankles chained to the granite wall opposite of the bars. There was only one face of her cube of personal space that was open, also unsurprisingly, barred. Two legionnaires had their backs turned on her while two more faced her at the opposite end. Her only light source was the lanterns in the hallway, even then it was still dark. The floor and walls were tactically the same, rough and chalky in some places. There was a bed chiseled out of the same stone with a single pillow for comfort.

If she wanted a way out, she'd need to find one herself. She hadn't heard nor seen Takeo, Reysa or even Hunter ever since her arrest. Perhaps they were planning to bust her out? But even then, she knew it was a task that was suicidal at best.

FOOTNOTES
1Salvation Point's Jail sits at the west of the Plaza of the Monolith towards Vadalias and near residential homes. It is a relatively small jail compared to those found in the larger cities but is made strong by the craftsmanship and of Vadalian wood alongside granite. It stands three stories high and could house a hundred inmates at a time and twenty or so in house guards. However, right now, it houses seven squads of active legionnaires stationed in and out of the jail. Thaa'nas are set in key locations with legionnaire escorts.

"Good bye Desiree, I look forward to it." The artist gave a small wave to the retreating figure. He turned back, and gave a short pause as he stared at the large golem, it was about and foot and a half taller than him but it was much wider than he was. Looking down to Faye, Lavernius remarked. "Being cordial and polite doesn't cost extra so I see no reason not to be welcoming to everyone. And if that makes me friends, all the better no?" When Faye informed of him of what she found out, it was impressive how close Desiree's response was, and the man shrugged. "Well sounds fine to me, less trouble for everyone is good for everyone. Now then shall we head into the marketplace?" He offered his hand again and set off to show her the wonderful crafts for sale in the bazaar.

************************************

Lavernius didn't spend much time in the bar, he had a light dinner and then got a flagon of spiced wine to take back to his room. The artist entered his room and locked the door behind him, and looked at the small quaint room. He put his knapsack by the side of his bed, withdrawing his sketchbook and coal sticks. With his tools he walked to the balcony and opened the room to the terrace. He was greeted by a gentle breeze of wind and a slight shudder went through his body. He brought a stool, his wine, and a lantern, placing them on the balcony. He sat down and stared up at the starry night but before he began sketching the sky, he pulled out his fountain pen from the special sheath in his vest and began writing. He started by asking how she was doing and that he hoped she was doing well and that he was though he missed her dearly. Then he wrote about how he met Itsuka and the beautiful carvings she showed him. He spent some time talking about the Isle of Foxes carving as well as the small broken one. He then wrote about meeting Illaya and Faye, mentioning how young Faye looked and how she was a full-fledged Thaa'nas. He then talked about the strange incident at the Izukana Quarters and then finished with the Vadelian and Izukanese artwork he saw at the marketplace. Signing the letter with the ending that he loved her and his name, he pulled the pen off the page and watched the words ripple then float off where they began collecting into an orb.

He poked the orb with his fountain pen and began drawing in the sky, forming the needed magical inscriptions to morph the ink into an insect. His magic took shape of a moth that fluttered onto the banister and looked back at Lavernius before it set off into the night. He didn't know whether or not it'd reach her, but he sent one every day so hopefully some would. They didn't need to rest or feed so they flew until they reached their destination, so it'd reach her by the morning. The spell he had used to make the moth was a special one, if the moth was caught with anything but a piece of paper, it would simply dissolve into a puddle, but if caught with a piece of paper it would turn into the heartfelt words Lavernius had written. It saddened him that she couldn't send letters back, but last time she tried, the insect lit the page on fire. He smiled at the memory and uncorked his wine, taking a sip as he reminisced before sheathing his pen and taking out his charcoal stick and begin sketching the night sky.

Lord Ashteroth, no question about that. The moment of truth came as their prisoner stepped out of the building. Yup, just as she thought, no one important. Scoundrels could be every bit as important at keeping a city held together as the city guard, but this one must not have been very good if she got herself caught. Thalia dropped down into the alley and walked back into the Izukani Quarter once everything went back to normal. It didn't take her long to get what she was after, and she didn't stay around long enough for it to matter. She made her way to the southern part of the town where people lived. Thalia slid into a dark alleyway to find a marked crate.

After parting ways with Lavernius who proved to be - unsurprisingly - a great guide during their little trip, sharing a lot of knowledge and pointing out many details the girl herself skipped, Faye spent rest of her day at the Tha'anas temple. The goal was to present her project there, as well as retrieve certain items from one of her associates. Unfortunately she had to leave the other core in there for the time being in order for it to go through closer inspection and few tests to judge the factual usefulness of such...'device'. It was a good thing they were interested in the slightest at least. After all, to make her vision work she needed all the support she could receive, and most of it would probably have to come from fellow Tha'anas.

***

Rumbling steps and humming announced her arrival at the inn. Faye stopped Atlas under the balcony paying no much heed to who could potentially be there, jumped off and began to bustle around the automaton, still crooning with her small voice. Apparently somewhere throughout the day she had a chance to change her clothes as instead of her Tha'anas uniform, she was wearing a white buttoned shirt and a gauzy turquoise skirt. Only royal blue bandana remained neatly tied around her neck. Standing on her toes the girl removed one of the stones on golem's back, revealing a small space from which she tried to pull out her knapsack. It was not without use of magic of course, as the rock itself was one of the bigger ones and had to remain in the air for the time of operation. And an operation it was, as the backpack appeared to be stuck, since Faye forcefully squeezed it in there in haste back at the temple, even though it was more full than usual. The mage pulled on the strap, struggling against perversity of inanimate object and own incapabilities until it suddenly gave in, making her lose her balance and spilling all the contents as it flew over her head. The humming was interrupted by a gasp and a thud.

Faye remained sprawled on the ground for a while, trying not to explode, before she got up with a growl of frustration. Dusting off her clothing, she put the stone back in its place with probably more force than necessary, and began to collect her belongings cursing under her breath. Clothes, tools, and just a countless number of filled paper sheets were scattered all around. All the research and notes she just received were undeniably mixed, and here she looked forward to browsing through these...

Thalia walked up the street and turned the corner towards the Dancing Horseman just in time to recognize Atlas, and to see Faye fall off of him and onto the ground with all of her papers. The sight was pretty amusing, but Thalia made her way over to help Faye with her papers at least. She had picked up half of them before Faye even noticed she was there, if she even recognized her. No doubt she looked like an entirely different person, wearing an elegant dress, actually wearing make-up, and having her hair fixed nicely rather than being braided in a ponytail. Thalia was being nosy and looking through the papers while Faye struggled to collect the rest of her belongings. Most of them comprised of elvish runes, which again sparked a certain curiosity in Thalia's mind. A sigh, if only she could escape this hell and be welcome among them. Perhaps she could learn enough from Faye to one day live among them. Or perhaps it was too soon to be having optimistic thoughts, especially having just ended the family line of one of her dearest friends. "You really ought to be more careful, y'know." Thalia handed the papers to Faye, a soft smile creasing her lips.

Lavernius hummed and softly sung his own repetoire of songs that he remembered. He sang the lyrics he remembered and simply hummed the melody to the words he had forgotten as he sketched the stars dancing. They swirled and spun around the moon, looking like streams of ethereal ribbons across the black skies.

He didn't pay much heed to the rumbling, passing it off as a cart or something of the likes, but when the rumbling stopped in front of the inn, curiosity took the better of him and putting his sketchbook on the stool, he grabbed the lantern and stood up. Peering over the balcony he was sirprised to see the back of the golem Faye had. On its back was a shallow pocket that he presumed was a saddle for the thaa'nas but it was currently empty. He looked past it to see a small figure, who he presumed was Faye being assisted by a woman in a dress. He couldn't see much detail the only lights being the soft orange glow from his lantern and whatever yellow beams could escape from the windows of the inn, swaying erratically to and fro to the pace of the drunken patrons' partying. "Hello Faye," he called down, not too loudly, but loud enough to be heard over the jovial din. "I thought you had work to be done at the temple."

It didn't take long for Mari to get acquainted to her cell. She had been in prisons before, and she knew very well that no prison was unbreakable. But this time around, the circumstances were very different, and the woman judged that it was in her interest to relax and let things unfold, hopefully shedding light on what was really going on. To say that this whole thing was simply an elaborate plan to capture her would have been madness. It was known that during the Festival, authorities would be more nonchalant and absent, which facilitated her operations. It was her Christmas. So in her mind, there must have been a very good reason as to why such attention was given to her.

She slowly raised her head, glancing at both guards on the other side of the bars, who were standing frozen, like statues.

"Gentlemen, I understand that by law you are obliged to satisfy the request of a prisoner before their sentence. And we all know that I'm not going to simply rot in this cell. So I would kindly like a pipe and some smoking tobacco, thank you." she cordially stated with the utmost calm.

Marianna Laranis, Salvation Point Jail
The guards that faced her nodded to one another, with the nearest one to the exit left to fetch Mari's request. Within minutes, the legionnaire returned to his post and another legionnaire, the crest of this one's helm was larger, appeared from the hallway.

He placed the pipe and tobacco on a platter and set it on the small gap under the bars and pushed it forward. "Anything else?"

"Hmm? Oh, thank you." As Faye was recovering from bent position picking up one of her things, she stopped half way when she noticed an extended hand holding a pile of papers in front of her face. Straightening back up, the girl took them gently and added to her own pile, pressed against her chest with the other arm. Just now Faye tucked her hair behind her ear and looked at the person helping her, at first frowning trying to recognize the features in dim light and then freezing in an awe. "Well you look pretty...prettier..." This time her gaze was solely stuck on woman's face. She thought Illaya went to work or something, so when she came back in such apparel it was quite a surprise. Still, that was not the reason why the girl froze like that. "You uh...You didn't see all that, did you?" She bit her lower lip and winced slightly, already knowing the bitter truth. Well, one can hope..."You totally did..." She added quietly, more to herself than her. Feeling her face getting hot and red Faye turned around on her heel moment later, trying to conceal the fact by returning to her previous activity. "Sooo...what you've been-"

"Hello Faye" A cherry. On the twisted. Cake.

"Anyone else?!" She yelled in her thoughts.

The girl let out an awkward chuckle before looking up. "Uh...Hello Lavernius... Well the work has been done...as per you can see..." There was still a bunch of papers laying around. "So...heh, what you two have been up to for the rest of the day?"

Thalia sat her bag down to help Faye with the rest of her papers. She blushed underneath her makeup and confirmed when Faye had asked, "I'm sorry, but I fear the whole world saw your tumble." Faye was being dangerously cute, and on a night where Thalia really needed a good release. Gods why did things have to be so complicated? Once all of the papers were picked up and returned, Thalia fetched her bag and slumped it over her shoulder. She looked up to Lavernius and interrupted over the noise in the tavern, "Well, why don't you invite these two lovely ladies upstairs and we can all discuss our adventures today?" If Lavernius couldn't recognize her through the darkness, perhaps he would recognize her voice. And if not her voice, maybe her sassy attitude.
