In Norway it is very hard to get a hold of a gun without going through several training courses on safety and handling the weapon first. Most common people doesn't bother getting the gun when they have to spend so much time on getting it. If it wasn't common to own a gun, impulsive murders would most likely drop a lot.
Of course it is impossible to make it impossible for criminals to get guns, they are criminals and can get the guns illegally. But that doesn't mean one shouldn't make it as hard as possible for them.

The idea is that Bobby Joe got the gun from a person smuggling them in from Russia or something.

I understood that, but I'll repeat myself: That criminals will always be able to get weapons illegally, doesn't mean we shouldn't try to prevent them from getting weapons as much as we can.

You're missing the point: a day or so wait is insignifigant for something they will use repeatedly. It's not like they need a new gun for every crime.

Why the hell not? THEY ARE. Or at least, the competant ones are, the ones that get 5 bank jobs under their belt without getting caught.

The world of crime isn't divided into gangsters and classy robbers that rob banks with telephones instead of guns like in Pulp Fiction. Almost every form of crime requires some sort of weapon, be it for the performance of the crime itself (Compare robbing a bank at gunpoint and robbing one at rubber duck-point and see if you aren't ****ing laughed at) or for self defense after the crime, or even as a back-up plan if the first plan fails.

Point is, gangsters aren't the only kind of criminal that needs guns, though you're right that they focus on killing each other.



Look at The UK as an example. It had a higher crime rate in 1997 than the US, and guns are illegal there.

Ash, if you are a serious crime, you are going to use your weapon once, then get rid of it. It makes it a lot harder to trace.

Depends on the crime. Murder, yes. But for use as a bank robbing tool, they won't be able to trace it.

Plus, most criminals buy several guns at a time, not just one, so if you are forced to actually USE your gun, you can switch to another for a while.

And it's really hard to trace illegal guns, btw. After all, most come from another country, and serious criminals pay with numarked cash to avoid leaving a perper trail.
