The JEWEL Effect
Well, somebody asked me how I do some of my effects in Flash and I'm going to show you a very easy and yet cool trick.
It's right in front of you, and now you will see it. Better you will learn it.

1. Introduction
Well now. So For your Flash animations or even longer featured movies, you will need some key factors.
Those being:
- Good screenplay and acting
- Characters with a lot of character
- Effects
- Props
The props are, for me what make the animation. Ever wonder why Bitey had so much success?
Just look
He made incredible backgrounds, added blurs gradients he had almost 3 hours of work for every backgrounds we see in seconds.
Each frame was a 5 minute work. And what does he get for all of that?
Well Newgrounds gave him money and the rest of people who liked Bitey, Respect.
That's what you can earn by making the little details and not just a plain colour Background.

2. Start on!
You need Flash, I'll be using Flash 8. For me it's the best.
For this single example I'll use a 100 x 100 Canvas
Remember you don't have to be an artist to make this, it's simple and it gives that special touch
Start by selecting your Brush
Then make a good scrap on your canvas.
The Colour you use now will decide the kind of jewel you're making.
Let's make a Ruby, yes? Choose a dark colour for your base.
Ok now you can make a new layer and lower Alpha levels over and over, or you can do it the simple way
Chose a slightly lightener colour than you dark red
Zap, paint! Do that with a smaller brush and then do it another time and paint on the opposite side of your 1st brush doodle, like this
Ok. Now the easy part. Making a light source.
Choose a brighter colour, not to bright tough.
Remember, this last step will depend from where your light is.

You can variate and add it wherever you like. Create your own style, and even detail it more!
