So, by popular request, I'm holding a Fraxy comp.
How it Works
There are four separate categories you can submit entries to:
Lightweight <40 Parts The lightweight category is for the smallest bosses. In a way this is the hardest category, since you have to design a boss that is still interesting with a very limited amount of parts.
Midweight 40-75 Parts These are your basic bosses, you have lots of room to be creative and design a really challenging fight.
Heavyweight >100 Parts Now we're talking capital ships, go nuts with giant battlecruisers and doom weapons. You have almost no limit to how much you can add to these ships, so take full advantage of it. I'm expecting only the highest quality entries for the heavyweights, so be willing to put some time into it. Don't just make a boss big for the sake of big and cover it in lasers, be creative.
Lightweight, Midweight, and Heavyweight bosses MUST be MOBILE. No stationary style cores, box cores, or rolling cores allowed here
Space Station >100 Parts If stationary type bosses are more your thing, this is the category for you. We're talking Death Stars here. These are supposed to be the most epic fights of all four categories, so go as nuts as you wish. Have multiple detaching miniships, giant laser turrets, layers upon layers of armour plating, spinning shields, whatever.
You may submit AS MANY bosses as you like to any category. There is no limit to the amount of submissions per person. Just make sure to put time into your bosses and not just submit hundreds of mediocre ones for the sake of it. If I feel a boss is really poorly put together, or it looks like it was done in 5 minutes, I'll simply exclude it from the competition. Use common sense to decide what is worth submitting
Cereal Man brought to my attention the issue of boss fights made up of fleets of small ships. I'm sorry, but I wont be accepting entries of this style. I can't allow a fleet of a bunch of small ships, whose parts total 100 to pass as a heavyweight entry. Bosses that explode into smaller ships, or deploy drone ships are fine. But for the most part, entries should be against a single boss

A few of you may have noticed that there is a large gap between midweight and heavyweight ships. This is not a typo. The reason I did this was to add more distinction between the two categories. Midweight and lightweight have a fine line between them, but for the heavyweights, which are supposed to be big, impressive capital ships, I wanted more distinction.I didn't want to have a 74 part ship falling under midweight, with a 76 part ship falling under heavyweight. The heavyweight category was reserved for only the biggest ships, with 100 as an absolute minimum.
Darkcampaigner is going to put together a "Try" scenario for the winning bosses. For those not familiar with Fraxy, "Try" mode allows you to create actual progressive missions as opposed to the free play mode in which you simply choose a boss and fight it.
The scenario will have 4 main boss fights in it. The first fight will allow the player to choose from 3 lightweight ships to fight, the second fight gives you a choice of 3 midweight ships, and the third fight gives you a choice of 3 heavyweight ships. The final fight will be against a large station boss.
In case you're really slow, you probably made the connection between the levels of the try scenario, and the categories of this competition.
So scoring for the competition will work as follows:
The lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight categories will each have 3 WINNERS. The first two will be chosen by a poll here on the forum. The third winner from each category will be a special honourable mention that I'll choose. I'll be looking for what I feel are the most creative, and most fun designs. For obvious reasons, my own submissions will not be able to receive the honourable mention, so don't whine about it being unfair and stupid. I'll be judging them in a completely fair and unbiased way.
The space station category will have only 1 WINNER which will become the final boss of the try scenario. Like the honourable mentions from the other 3 categories, I will be choosing the winner for this competition, as opposed to doing a poll. Once again, please don't whine about this, I'll be judging them based on which one will make the most suitable final boss for the scenario.
I'm looking for creativity, and above all, a fun and balanced fight. You wont win with a 10000000 health core and a hundred giant lasers mounted on tentacles, because it may be hard, but it's not fun to fight.
That's a total of 10 bosses that make it into the try scenario, so there's lots of opportunity to win in this comp.
Rules for Entering
You MUST include a picture of your boss. And unlike my Fraxy showoff thread, I don't want any action pictures, or in game screenshots. In order to get a good, simple idea of your design, just take a picture of the ship, in it's stopped position, in the Fraxy editor.
You MUST include a download link, for obvious reasons.
You MUST include which category you are submitting an entry for
REMEMBER TO FOLLOW THE PART RESTRICTIONS
I'll be checking the part count of each entry before it gets accepted into the competition. Don't try to cheat the part limits, it's half the challenge in the lightweight and midweight categories.
AN ENTRY COMPOSED OF A FLEET MANY SMALL SHIPS DOES NOT PASS AS HEAVY OR MIDWEIGHT
That's about it for the rules. There is no fixed deadline for entries right now, since I have no idea how fast this idea will take off. I'll update this post with a deadline when it seems appropriate to set one.
Have fun guys.
This thread is for finished entries only. Any posts that don't contain a finished entry that meets the above guidelines will be deleted. QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION belong in the discussion thread. If you want criticism of your boss design, or you want to compliment somebody elses, simply post them in the Official Fraxy Thread
