I dunno if anyone has caught this yet, but I guess I will. There is no such thing as darkness. Darkness cannot be measured, since you are measuring light. The term "dark" is merely used to describe an absence of light. The same goes for 0. "0" is just used to describe a lack of value. Hence, zero is not a number perse, but rather an explanation for what is not there. If zero is in the ones column (10), it shows a lack of value for that area. There is value in the tens, just not the ones. This lack of value is represented by the numeral 0. The same goes for the number 1000. There is no value in the hundreds, tens, or ones columns.
