Hmmm... I'm not sure about this situation, because my friends were sure strong an smart enough to bypass this....phenomenon.

But if he just heard that it helps and started cutting himself, I would shove some cold water in his face and tell him exactly what it does and that it doesn't help for S**T.

If he was doing that because he suddenly started thinking it's cool to be emo, I would punch his face in and probably never speak with him again.
You can try holy water... although the probablity of success is about 5%, when 4% is that he actually thinks "People think I'm the devil or something? I gotta stop!"
There are also small techniques that may help a bit, like Bobby McFerrin.
All I know, is that there is no chance that physycal pain will help against mental pain. So if it comes down to not thinking about it, just keep him occupied in something... maybe knitting.

But heck, I never got to deal with more than a one day depression.
