Seriously, he has more than likely picked this behavior up from more kids at school, etc. Kids now a days think that it is cool to cut themselves back in middle school kids would run around showing others, he will get over it, it's just a phase, seriously were would a 9 year old boy learn this other than his friends.
I have seen this so many times, don't be to worried.
Keep an eye on him though, if it begins to escalate
then therapy, might be the best route.

Ok, me and my friends, a while ago, invented "The Plan".
In the event that someone attempts to suddenly change attitude or gets angsty, "The Plan" is to be used to show them that there are much worse things in life.
"The Plan" is:
1. Inform a few trusted friends what the plan is, and get them to help you out; at least two.
2. When the 'subject' is unexpecting, approach quickly in a line. Not too hastily, or the subject will realise something is up.
3. As soon as the first person in the line is close enough, they are to suddenly accelerate and launch a kick to the groin, then quickly move away to the side.
4. The next person repeats this before the 'subject' falls to the ground.
5. Repeat Step 4 as many times as necessary.
6. Point out that they should stop being so angsty, because physical pain is a lot worse and angstiness brings about physical pain.
7. Silent treatment until 'subject' either stops being so angsty or kills himself, either of which is better then the previous situation.
7. ?????
8. Profit!
