Why should animation be so structured? It's a hobby. If anyone is looking to animation as their career of choice, then that's their business. If anyone needs more motivation to continue animating, obviously it's not the field for them.

Besides, spp seems to be doing fine without ranks- why do you need them so badly? Shouldn't the person animating judge how good they are from their own perspective and try to please themselves by meeting their own criteria?

And what do you guys care so much about "motivating others" when it appears you need a stupid system to motivate yourselves.

The rank system sucks ass. All of the reasons were already said in this thread so.... =/

**** ranks. They wouldn't be a profit. Yeah, sure. The pro of competitiveness is a big one that helps people, but that among other smaller pros look like notihing weightd against the many significant cons stated in this thread. Sub forum creation isn't a good idea, Discrimination, fights, cause for stealing animation, less focus on actual skill and more on your stand against everyone else in the forum, less technical crit, etc..

It isn't a good idea and your nostalgia of the old ways things happened isn't enough to make it a better idea.

The thing is, people aren't on this forum to animate for a hobby. The come here to learn to animate because most of the people on this site have seen the actual stickpage, and want to learn how to animate like the videos on it. So I personally think that's the reason. Of course all you older members think that this is a bad idea because you've already learned how to animate. Not everyone has to be a part of the ranking system. Like someone (don't remember) said. If you guys don't care then don't be a part of it. But I think it would benefit the new members tremendously.

Theres no real need for a rank system when you could just tell them how good the animation was

Ranking was never really a system.
Just personal opinions put into short terms, as 2-D said.

I like the current system, it causes a lot less bickering. Beginners and non-beginners.

I disagree. How good you are at animation has a lot to do with the skill level of your peers. If everyone was frontpage material, then that would be standard.

You can only be above average if you are above the average. That said, to see if you are any good you HAVE to compare yourself to other people. Sure, of course when asked everyone says "blah I'm just doing it as a hobby, personal standards", but when it comes down to it everyone wants to be the best.

With that said, Rankings are a big No. I would hate to be "technically" worse or better than someone. If you're good, everyone should know it without petty titles.

The Rank System was actually one of the most useless and annoying things on SP. IMO anyway. It's useful in Pivot, but not for Flash and Eztoon and other free drawing programs, as you can use different styles, whereas Pivot is fixed to one style. It also let people rely only on 'ranks' that others give them, instead of actual C&C. Instead of people saying 'work on ___ and ____ and also _______ needs more easing etc' they'd just have an excuse to be lazy and say 'borderline low high med silver eight thousand nine' or whatever they're tyrying to say.

BUT..

It brought competitive kinds of animation which made people try harder, so there's one good reason.

It also brought flaming. When people were claimed 'Veteran' they'd say "LOL U NOOB U SUK IM BETTUR THAN U!!!!!!!!!!!" which made things worse.

So really I think the rank system should be left behind.

You know what they say.. "Never look back, it hurts your neck".

Ranks are just another excuse for discrimination. We already do it with post counts and you know what that produces. Besides, no one really knows what they're talking about when they rank someone. Everyone bases how good an animation is off of how realistic someone can make a punch look without any regard for creative style being used.

I really hate it when people do that. Try to make it seem like I'm doing this for myself. Honestly, I probably won't be a part of it if it was made. I just thought it would be a good idea to see how it worked. I just wanted to test it out...basically read my post on how I thought it should've been run. I thought its a good way to measure your own progress.

Lol, Cicada generalized kinto and a few others into 'yourselves' and then kinto generalized him into 'people'.

Rank system is good, it will make people put a goal or a certain rank achievement that they want achieve. People will keep something to motivate them into becoming better and better.

Now people are just animating randomly and it seems like there is no structure to this community.

Back then we had really good animators, now, it's just, wanna-be animators. Plus people are quitting faster.

We need ranks.

Personally I think it should be the newer members choice. I doubt any older members will participate in it anyway.

if it was properly structured, official and exact then it would be good, cause no one would say "if he's high beginner, then I should be at LEAST low inter, cause I'm defiantly better than him!" but since that can't and won't happen its a really bad idea, if you need motivation, find someone near your skill level and have a friendly competition to get better with him.

That's how I motivated myself to finish the SPP Contest #2, me and SSJ were sort of having a competition... Even though he was better and won, it motivated me to get better.

f ranks, they suck.
