That last point is the one I meant this debate to be about. I don't give a flying **** whether you're Christian, or what Christmas is about. I just think people go WAAY over the top acting as if it's a necessity to buy all their shit weeks/months before Christmas. It was much better when I was younger and you got all your stuff 1/2 weeks before, and only celebrated it in the week. And even then, not every shop would be packed to the ****ing brim with shoppers mad to get their stuff.

I don't really see what you're debating about. Christmas being a holiday for places to make more money? To have better sales?
There's nothing wrong with that at all.

I'm not a christian, but I celebrate Christmas as a holiday. Because that's all it is now. I never will and never have seen it in a way we should be celebrating a mans birth. We celebrate it as a family, to buy them things and show them our love through that. We make it a day show it's about giving (and taking).
If you have a product and want to have it selling better, what better way than to use a worldwide event. People hear the words "half price" and think "oh, goody". People hear the word "Christmas" and think "SHIT YEAH". Why not put those words together to give a "OH, SHIT YEAH THAT'S A GOODY" effect?

Now, my problems with Christmas is that Christians (Well, I've argued with one about this, but grouping them together makes it sound better), is that they complain about it being a day to celebrate Jesus' birth. My argument is simply: You made this event this big, you made the idol some fat bloke in a red suit, not Jesus. Some of you may have told kids Jesus is going to bring you presents, because getting shit from people is awesome and just so much better as a kid, but I'm not from a religious family and I got told "Santa" was doing that.
If it was Jesus, only Christians would celebrate it. If the whole point of Christmas hadn't changed to some day where you have to go out your way to give everybody another Birthday of their own, then it would be a pretty boring event. It's exciting, it's a fun day. It's a day where you get up early hours even if it is a weekend just to unwrap something and say "thanks".
When I think of christmas I think of decorated trees, santa, buying presents and something I may want that year.

The point is: Christmas is just a holiday, an event for all. I don't see it as anything else, because, quite frankly, It doesn't matter when you can be enjoying it.

Forgive me if I've just created an amount of senseless rambling, I've only had 2 hours sleep in the past 60 hours.

Christmas is about celebrating the life of Jesus, who gave his life for us, and you don't care people take advantage of that for money?

who cares if its now a commercial holiday, its great to see everyone come together like they do on christmas.

and if you want to celebrate christmas for jesus being born on that day then do that, but we'll all be having fun over here with the attractive people.

The Christmas season starts after Thanksgiving. Period. I am sick of stores having BS Christmas sales and putting up lights before then. The whole goal is to extend Christmas as long as possible so people will buy more, but they are ruining Thanksgiving. It's the second most American holiday (after 4th of July) and they are ruining it!

Maybe it's because...

On average, each person spends 800 dollars on gifts. If you ran a business, you'd be an idiot not to try to get a piece of it.

I am very jewish, but unfortunetly most of my family is christian, so i have (get) to celebrate christmas instead. Once you reach a certain age (for me it would be this year, being 14) you do realise that its not just about the presents, and i hate to sound moral and like your mother, but i feel that i have more fun spending time with my close and extended family.

But i do see where your going with it becoming more commercialized. i remember getting christmas cards from everyone on christmas, and going through the daunting task of opening them. but this year, i didnt get any from anyone, and it kinda feels a bit sad that its become all about the gifts and not as much the thought. Even if i love my new Varsity Jacket (capitilized for emphasis).

This is just how it will always be, untill the parents get some damn balls.

Saint Nicholas is Santa Clause, because he gave out gifts to children on Christmas day, Coca Cola gave him his red outfit sometime in 1960.

Thats where all the marketing comes from.

It was earlier than 1960, I think.

And it wasn't coke. That's a myth.
