What is a good movie editor to use to stitch videos together and do other neat things like mess with the playback frame rate and make gif's and such and such?

For gifs, try easy gif animator
it is pretty much like paint, except with frames

When piecing together game play clips or fragments of video I use Sony Vegas.
Doesn't support creating .gifs but it's still a good program.
(EDIT:If you want to make a .gif just use flash and export the video as a .gif file.)

Any recommendations on tutorials for Sony Vegas 8?
Just because I'm too lazy to search for some.
