Definitely get wire mod. If you have any experience with the mechanics of electronics then you can basically do it in garrysmod.

Wire mod is the shit, and alot less complicated then It looks, just ranger, explosive sign arithmetic 1 0 -1 and you'll have a sweet trap

Learn .lua coding if you really want to get into it.

Also making some nice maps in hammer for different reasons can't hurt either.

also, get a tool pack or two.
